im thinking of getting a new computer and all this core duo, 2x single core stuff is really confusing me. my current computer is running a pentuim 4, 2.4ghz. would a 2.4 dual core be any better for gameing? how do they compare?

The P4 & it's netburst architecture sucks...always did & always will. It was probably the worst CPU Intel ever produced. The P3 was much better...the Core 2 Duo is actually based on the P3.

Single core CPUs are all but dead. They shouldn't even be considered unless you're on a super low budget.

Just to give you an idea of how much better the Core 2 Duo is than a single core P4, here's a comparison of a C2D E4300 1.8Ghz vs a P4 540 3.2GHz.:

It's not even close.

The core 2 duo is a special type of dual core cpu. For example, the Pentium D(which is generally not as good as a core 2 duo) is a dual core cpu which is NOT a core 2 duo. A core 2 duo cpu is generally more efficient and runs cooler.

From http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/2...
"Dual Core means what looks like a single CPU on the outside actually contains two seperate processors on the inside. There are a large number of "Dual Core" processors on the market. The "Core 2 Duo" is one of these and is the fastest. Both Intel and AMD have been making Dual Core processors for a few years now."
Search for cpu's like E6550, E8400, etc. if you want more specifics.
