so i got the a7n8x-x. and guys, i got my memory rebooting problem fixed.
i had the chips in slot 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2. from left to right the DIMM slots go 2,3,1 so obviously i got confused and realized when cpu-z was showing me what was in slot 1 2 and 3.
anyway, my board is not dual channel. the deluxe version of this board HAS dual channel and is only a couple bux more(why i didn't catch this before...i dunno).
would it be worth it if i sold this board and got a deluxe board? would it boost my performance allot? a little? are there any downfalls to this?
thanx

Definitely go for it. Running an NF7-S rev 2.0 dual channel and compared to running a singlle stick the improvement is VERY noticeable, even on a Socket A.

dual channel for both Athlon XP and 64 socket 754 is unnecessary; tight timing is, but not much.

No, it's not worth it on a socket A system, & sorry CPU, I don't believe your claim. The performance increase is at best, 5%, & it's only under certain circumstances. The only time the difference would be noticed would be in benchtests. The "real world" difference would be undetectable by the user.

Here's why it's unnecessary...

At 200MHz (400FSB), the CPU's bandwidth is 3200MB/sec. PC3200 RAM running at 200MHz in single channel mode has a bandwidth of 3200MB/sec. Dual channel mode theoretically doubles the RAM bandwidth to 6400MB/sec, but the CPU's FSB/bandwidth is the limiting factor.

Here's a good article that documents the difference:

On Athlon XP based systems, RAM timings won't do a whole lot for you. Dual channel does virtually nothing for you.

But it's still worth tightening them down. If the computer doesn't boot, hold insert key on power up, and it should reset your memory timings and CPU settings to failsafe.

hero,

I had never heard of the insert key thingy. So in other words, one does not have to remove the battery to reset?

Your memory might be labeled with it on a sticker...or maybe it's on the packaging...invoice...they say something like 6-3-3-2.5.
