Subject: Does the Intel D845GRG support HT?
OS: XP Pro
CPU/Ram: 1.7GHz Cel, 256MB DDR333
Model/Manufacturer: Whitebox
Comment:
Hi, I was given a computer from my dads work again, I'm thinking of doing a few upgrades on the cheap and using it for music recording and backups. It has an Intel D845GRG motherboard so unfortunately no overclocking. I just wanted to know if it supports a P4 with HT. In its processor support page it goes up to 2.8GHz with 533 System bus and 512K of L2. I was looking at a 2.6GHz P4 with HT and wondering if it would work.

I'm going to put in another gig of DDR and if HT processors are no go I'll just go for a proc with 512K L2 instead of this crappy Cely with 128K.

Any help appreciated!

Did a little more searching and it appears that the 845G does support HT. It also appears that some OEM versions of the D845GRG in gateway PC's ran with 3GHz Procs... But I'm wanting to put this thing in a small case, so a hot P4 probably isnt a good idea.

As you've already found out, the i845 does support HT. However the 2.6C runs at 800MHz FSB, which the 845 does not support.

If you want HT, you'll need to install the P4-3.06, which is the only hyper-threaded FSB-533 processor.

As long as it isn't a Prescott, it'll be fine. A Northwood P4 would dissipate around the same amount of heat as the Willamette Celeron that you've already got in there. Maybe even less.

The Firewall/Print/File Server:
1.26GHz PIII-S
1GB RAM
Radeon 9700 Pro
2 x GigE
Remote on/off
4 x 750GB HDDs
Storing 200 DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/Laserdisc faves

I might just skip HT then. Not the easiest to find, nor the cheapest. A 2.4 or 2.6 will do fine. I'll try go for a 533MHz FSB for the extra speed. When it comes down to it this celeron will probably do fine, but upgrading this is part of the fun. If I cant find anything for a decent price I may just go for a 1.8GHz P4 with 512K L2 they are easy to find and cheap.

Thanks for the links jam. sammers, according to intel's website it does. I'm probably not going to get HT now anyways.

Wow... The CPU's forum dosent move anywhere near as fast as it used to. Anyways, since this is still near the top I thought I'd let you know that I ended up getting a 2.26GHz/533/512KB P4 for $20. I'll buy some RAM later and then build the case. I'll post up pics when I'm done. Will be a while yet though!
