Subject: Do I need Thermal Paste?

Comment: Hi all, I'm shortly going to try and fit a Duron 1200 in a Shuttle AK31 mobo. I've not done this before and don't want to arse it up. Will I need some sort of thermal paste between cpu and heatsink?, or can I use thermal pads?. If so how much do I need, and how do I apply it. Also does it get applied to the top of the cpu only or the bottom of the heatsink as well. Cheers Ming

Reply: (edit)Thermal compound goes one the cpu core ONLY. That is the raised square or rectangle in center of chip. VERY little is needed. Don't force it by pressing down on heatsink while trying to clip it to socket, and pay attention to heatsink orientation, as they are designed to fit CORRECTLY only one way. Do it backwards, and you will destroy the cpu. I went from slot A to socket A, and read the cpu installation instructions 6 times before I was ready to go for it. Did it right the first time as a result. All you need is to be careful and use a flat blade screwdriver to do the clipping of heatsink to cpu socket. These newer cpus are very delicate and easy to crack if not careful. Charles
