I have had this PC for a while now and every time I open it up to clean the dust out, I notice that the CPU dosent have any thermal grease and the metal on the CPU its self is chipped everywhere. If the metal is chipped it cant have very good contact with the heatsink. So does my CPU need grease to get full contact with my heatsink? My case temp which is the only sensor I have says 37*C and my new hard drive is about 36*C. My HDD is about 1 degree cooler than the case temp because it is mounted in a 5.25" bay with a 8cm fan on to it. Would my case temp be cooler if the heatsink had thermal grease? It is 34*C outside and 28*C in my room. Thanks for any help.

I would be nice to have some in there to make the transfer of heat off the processor to the heatsink.

plyduster,
I did site search and there is many posts regarding how to add thermal paste and other questins about thermal paste but I cant see any about if they shoud use it. I already know how to apply it.Mattwizz3 : )

Hi Matt...
I am wondering how you know that there is no thermal grease applied. The grease is applied between the top of the CPU and the heatsink, so it is covered by the heatsink and can't be seen.
And same thing goes: why do you say your CPU is chipped? It can't be seen because it is covered by the heatsink. And there is no metal on a CPU, it is silicon.
Are you sure that you are using the correct terms to try to describe what you are looking at??Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day;
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime;
Then industry pollutes the water and kills all the fish.

It can be seen when the two come apart, they do come apart.
After that, there will prob. a decsent size spot where the grese was applied beofre-hand.
Have you ever done this before or read anything about this, because from what it sounds like, you have not.

Did you check the BIOS for your CPU temp?
Are you talking about a Slot A CPU? If so, the CPU & heatsink would both be visible, but I doubt you could tell whether there's any paste or not.
Where do you live that your room temp is 28C (82F+)? Your case temp isn't high, but the closer to room temp the better. Do you have any case fans?

Sorry for the very late reply, but I may as well answer.
It is a slot A Processor, when I take it out and unclip the heatsink there is a small raised pice of metal, which isnt the CPU its self but it is between the heatsink and the CPU to transfer heat. The metal is the part that is chipped.
I live in Melbourne Australia, and its been hot lately thats why my room temp is 28*C. I have no airconditioner. : (
I have one side case fan, and the fan in front of the hard drive, they both take in air from outside. I cant check the temp of the CPU because I only have one case sensor.
I think I will put some thermal grease on anyway. It cant hurt, right?
Thanks for all of your help.

If you are still checking on this, sry for late response, but i was in the hospital.
You said that they both take air in from the outside, well, reverse them. The only fans that should take air in are the ones that mount on the back of your machine, everything else should take air out, and the ones that the air take in, should always be shaded, and in the coolest part of the room.
No, it never hurts.

"The only fans that should take air in are the ones that mount on the back of your machine, everything else should take air out"
That is incorrect. You want air flowing from front to back. The PSU acts as an exhaust fan & if you have another fan beneath it, it should also act as an exhaust fan. The side panel fan should be an intake fan, & if you have a fan in the lower front of the case, that should be an intake as well.

Hey guys i heard i guys were talking about fans? well from what i know he lives in australlia right? well its hott and you dont want hott air blowing in your system so try to take the air out or get a liquid colling system yeah?? well just try the get the fans to blow out not in and what i think is that they are making fans that blow in and out cuzz the fans in my comp. the fans blow in and out so... but i have like 8 fans so no worry =] well just give it a try and thermal greese? yeah put some of that on to HELP the CPU cool down it transfers heat more beter
He wuts up im not a computer wizz but i know a hella lot bout them =]

Thanks for the suggestion Jason but I dont think that I will go to the expence of water cooling for this system. Maby when I get a new computer.
