Do Dual MP's have to be same speed?

I have a Tyan MB which has cooked one of my processors (AMD MP 2000's) - I now have a new MB. My question is - do I have to buy 2 new processors or can I have AMD MP's of different speeds? (I can only find MP's of 2200 and above for sale)

I asked a question about the mp a while back and know one here seems to know much about them. I assume you are talking about the processors used in servers. Is that correct?

Not mobile processors?

IMO, if it is the server processors you are talking about, it would be best to have two matching processors.

From the AMD "Builder’s Guide for 2P Capable Servers and Workstations"

"Dual Processor Requirements

For AMD dual processor platform, both of the AMD Athlon™ MP processors must be of
the same frequency.

Note: Both processors must be AMD Athlon MP processors."

I'm just curious as to how did one processor burn out. Hope you don't have some problems with your mobo. You wouldn't want to see that happen again. I think that I would have to send it on in and have it given a clean bill of health before I tried installing another new processor into it. I would also have the power supply checked out (under a load) just to make sure nothing was flakey with it too. Also, are the slots of ram designated for each cpu? You do have ram for the one that burned out don't you?

YO,

Likely a heatsink or fan problem on that particular cpu.

If this board is like most Socket A Thunder and Trinity motherboards, it only requires one registered ECC memory module to work.

Some of these Tyan boards also use a 24pin + 8 pin power supply.

It might be helpful to know which board we're talking about here but Tyan also says motherboard damage might occur with mismatched processors.

The only one I've ever worked with was a s2468(?) with AMD760 chipsets. At the time, it had one PC2100 registered ecc chip in slot 1 and two unregistered non ecc memory modules in slots 2 & 3. We installed a memory upgrade package of 2 registered ecc 1Gb chips and the instructions said to install them in slot 1 and slot 2. We were dumb enough to read and follow the instructions and everything booted and worked fine.

Here's one site that advertises MP 2000+ processors for sale:

Hey Skip! So none of the ram is designated for a particular processor meaning both processors share the ram equally?

Thanks for the follow up!

Yes; as far as I know. Tyan does make a slew of dual proc motherboards though. Expensive motherboards, processors and memory make me a little nervous and I like to know everything I can before I mess with 'em...hate to be the guy who smokes a couple thousand dollars worth of gear.

I do remember the memory upgrade package for the board I mentioned came not only with instructions, but also with a copy of the motherboard manual and a phone number to call if it didn't recognize the chips and boot.
