Subject: did i kill my cpu? OS: Win 2000 CPU/Ram: Athon XP 2000/3*256DDR

Comment: I set up my new (sorta) box last night. I have never installed a new CPU before, but it went ok, i tought. When I try to power it up the fans all start but then it just shuts off after about 3secs. Did I crunch the cpu when installing it? Or mayber the power supply I have isnt powerful enouigh for the new mobo/cpu. Ar these symptoms someone might have if their power supply isnt up to snuff, or is it clear that i broke my cpu? All of the other connections and jumper settings are set up correctly, after a couple of thourough checks. Thanks, PJ

Reply: (edit)I forgot to add that there were no system alarms, not that there is that much time for alarms before the thing just shuts down.

Reply: (edit)If you’re thinking CPU damage, check the core with a bright light and a magnifying glass for chips. The edges should be almost razor sharp.

Reply: (edit)Try moving the power button connector the other way round on the motherboard case headers. If this doesn't work try booting it with a flat head screw driver (shorting the 2 pins) If that doesn't work could you find out the exact specs of your power supply? I.e. Voltages on 3.3V and 5V rails. (There should be a sticker on the right hand side of the power supply. (On the motherboard side of the case) You may have to take the right hand pannel off the case to see it.

Reply: (edit)I had a similiar problem with my Soyo mobo and xp2000+, it would shut off maybe after 5 seconds with a long beep sound. I found out it was because my BIOS has a cpu fan safety detection. If the fan doesn't spin fast enough it would shut down the computer to prevent damage. I turned this setting off, and it starts up everytime. If you're able to get into BIOS try checking to see if you have this feature. I think if you hit the insert key it supposed to bypass the check as well.

Reply: (edit)yes I had that problem, Idid kill my CPU the CPU fan started for 1 sec and kept shutting down, usually if you take your CPU out and run the system and it works, the CPU im afraid to say is dead, I took my CPU back to the shop and said it was a faulty one, had it exchanged straight away, mine is an Atlon XP 2100+ Hope this helps
