desktop icon/rebooting problem

The desktop icons are all generic icons for some reason. When I tried to reboot, I went to start, turn off computer, and then reboot but nothing happened. I turned off the computer via the power button and when I turned it back on the same problems were there. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try posting in the Windows XP forum. BTW, is your antivirus software up-to-date? I'm not saying you have a virus, but it's possible. Can you try to run System Restore?
