hey every one. i have a dell dimension 4500s motherboard with a 1.8 g intel celeron processor and i am trying to put a processor that came out of an e-machine t3990 which is a Intel Celeron D 335 / 2.8 GHz. i know the 1.8 is a Northwood and the 2.8 is a Prescott. i read somewhere that the prescott can only be used in the 4500s with the proper bios upgrade. when i tried it out all i got was a black screen. no bios and no beeps. can i use this processor? will the bios upgrade effect my mobo? if it still doesnt work after the upgrade will my original cpu still work? any help at all is more than greatly appreciated. thanx a lot everyone

"i read somewhere"
Where is somewhere ? maybe you could post a link ?

Dell Support are the obvious place to get the answer and no a BIOS upgrade does not mean you can not still use your correct CPU!

" when i tried it out all i got was a black screen. no bios and no beeps." does this mean that you tried the bios upgrade? do you still have the celeron installed?

Upgrade the bios before hand using dells website, using link from "bakers". I recently upgraded a Dell dimension 1100 and 2400 and all after a bios upgrade they went from a Celeron 2.2ghz to a Pentium 4 HT 2.8ghz. The Bios update even said "support for new cpus". Yeah so try there, i also found a good thing was to google the dell system and see what the best cpu they came with as standard as this i sure to work or look for other people which have upgraded the cpu, this is probably the best and safest way. If i was you id get a cheap Pentium 4 of ebay!
Good luck

thanx for all the info everyone. answers to your questions: i dont remember where i read that about the Prescott used with update. i think it was another forum but not sure. and sorry i wasnt clear and no i havent done the bios update yet. the black screen was just trying out the new processor. but thanx again for the help. the reason im tryin to use the cpu is cuz i got it for free. but "02coled", does the support for new cpus refer to different manufacturers like going from the Northwood to the Prescott? i downloaded the upgrade but not yet. will let you all know what happens.

so i try to do the update and it says i already have that version. which is a03 and i do have it. so i tried doing the a04 and i use the boot disk it has me make and all it does is say loading ms-dos... and there it sits till i reset it. any suggestions on what to do or where to get a different update?
DJ Donny

Use the one that runs from windows! And North wood / Prescott are the core names given by the companys, not the manufactures name like (Intel/Amd)!! Prescott have higher a new core design using higher level 2 cache and in some cases faster FSB. Try the bios upgrade and then try the cpu reinstall!
good luck

k thanx but can you please help me find a link to the update that runs from windows. the only one i found was the a03 which is the bios i already have.
DJ Donny

I have already posted a link that the CPU you are trying to install is not compatable, nothing is going to change that.
"Intel Pentium 4 that runs at 1.70, 1.80, 1.90, 2.00 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally; 2.26, 2.40, 2.53, or 2.66 GHz internally and 533 MHz externally; or Intel Celeron that runs at 1.70, 1.80, or 2.00 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally"
Also DELL only go to BIOS A03, just except you made a pigs ear of upgrading by not investigating first:

oh ok thanx bakers. but i didnt upgrade anything. i got the cpu for free and just wanted to try it out. but thank you all for all the help
