my bro's custom biult (a few years ago) computer has:
500mhz AMD K6-2 CPU
256mb SDRAM
14gb hard drive
ATI Rage 128 GL AGP graphicsanyway, the WTF question is:
just a couple of weeks ago his comp slowed to a crawl for no apperant reason (no new software or anything). upon running the latest version of CPU-Z (version 1.31), CPU-Z reported that the CPU was 250mhz, instead of 500mhz. it said the multiplier was 5x like it actually is but it said the FSB was only half what it is supposed to be (50mhz instead of 100mhz); the mobo jumpers are still set to 100mhz FSB and 5x multiplier. Windows ('my computer properties') still reports a 500mhz CPU, as does the POST. but CPU-Z says its half that all of the sudden, and it has slowed to a crawl just lately for no apperant reason.
is CPU-Z correct, or is Windows and the POST correct??? what the f*** is going on here??
thanks all
older technology is the s---; keep it running

My guess would be CPUZ is wrong. If the board is configured solely with jumpers & they weren't tampered with, there's no way the CPU speed changed.
I would scan for spyware, run MSCONFIG & look for questionable entries under the Startup tab, scan for viruses, defrag.
Hellz Yea!

Truly,as the faint rememberance of the basic English language slowly fades away....Have you tried any of the free spyware and ad-aware programs?

i have run system scans with Ad-Aware SE 1.06 and Spybot-S&D 1.4 and AVG Free 7 on latest defs. as well as a scan with PC Tools Regisry Mechanic, disk cleanup, and defragmenting
still runs like sh*t...
it used to run much better then this...
and nothing has changed!
any other ideas?
and CPU-Z has never let me down before why would it suddenly be making mistakes?

Requote:"A few years ago my brother custom built a computer.A few weeks ago the computer slowed to a crawl."The first thing I would do is uninstall and re-install CPU-Z.If that don't work try re-installing the operating system or do a repair install.
