Hi, Was wondering how far i could push my system switching out from ddr400 to DDR500.
amd 3800 x2 @ 2.4ghz right now, current mem is at 250mhz and stable.

I know this is kinda vague, but just a lil info will help me figure out if i should make the jump.

You are at DDR 500 now.

250MHz => DDR500

Your DDR400 is actually 200MHz.

Do some reading on DDR RAM (google!) and you will know why RAM speeds are indicated as double that of the clock speeds.

I presume you have a DDR400 (200MHz) and you have pushed it to 250MHz (DDR500). Correct?

In which case you have already attained the speed of a DDR500 (which is very expensive, by the way). I would not spend money on a DDR500 to push beyond 250MHz.

Rather, set the DRAM speed in your BIOS to DDR333 and then continue push the CPU core higher to get your desired overclock. That way the RAM is not pushed beyond limits and the CPU is overclocked.

Yup, I agree with Kailas.

When overclocking an A64 system, you do NOT have to run the CPU & RAM at the same bus speed. If you can do it, great...if you can't, your system won't take a huge performance hit because of it.

If you set the RAM speed to DDR333 & increase the CPU frequency to 250MHz, the RAM will run at approx 208MHz. If you were to set the RAM speed to DDR266 & then increase the CPU frequency to 300MHz, the RAM will run at 200MHz. Always make sure to adjust the HT multiplier so that the HyperTransport bus doesn't exceed 1000MHz. So if the CPU freq is 250MHz, the HT multi should be set to 4x, but if you increase the CPU freq above 250MHz, you should lower the HT multi to 3x.

Be sure to lock the PCI bus at 33MHz & the PCI-E bus at 100MHz, & disable Cool 'n Quiet. You *may* have to increase the CPU voltage to stabilize the overclock.

I'm surprised the HT bus isn't giving you a problem...it's at 1200MHz (4 x 300)
