I am trying to run a Cyrix 6x86 150mhz (PR200) on an EPoX EP-MVP3G2 motherboard which was given to me recently. it was last running an AMD K6-2 450mhz processor which fryd. since then it has not been tested.

i BELIEVE i hav correctly set the voltage for the CPU as well as multipliers and bus speed. but wen i go to power on the power LED comes on for a split second, then dies. if again i try to press the power button it dus nt even do that. in order to get the LED to do this again i hav to unplug the power cord n plug it in again.

I have tried this with another Cyrix processor and PSU; a cyrix 333 which had the same result.

is this board dead or not?

You did say the last processor on the board was fried, there is a possibility the CPU took the board with it. The board obviously supports the Cyrix 6x86MX and you've swapped out the "usual suspect" components already, I suggest you go over the your jumper settings again.

The board does offer the "Easy Setting Dual Jumper" setting for easy clock and multiplier selection, so that part should be easy, also double check the voltage jumper and if you can locate the manual or download it, it will help too.

what caused the cpu to fry? usually if the cpu is burned, the motherboard will be damaged, it happened to me once

i have no idea what caused it to fry. i would be taking a stab guessing that the fan went on the last CPU. i dont think it was overclocked.

i just have the feeling that the board has a keil switch of some kind...i have another board which is fried (aparantly) which doesnt display the same behavior..it doesnt do anything.

well on my board which i fried by, dont laugh at me, sticking in the cpu sideways and halfway in the socket, the socket itself was burned and when i turned on the computer the mobo lights flickered for a second brightly and then went to flickering so dimly i could only see them in a dark room btw that was in my laptop /(
im still mourning

still anytime a cpu burns it will tend to take the mobo with it
do you know what part of the cpu burned? the die, the pins?
on mine the pins were burned, i felt like such a ****up dumb**** retard

My oc'd and over volted Cyrix 233 fried almost immediately when the heatsink fan slowed down. The motherboard survived and is still working today.

If you think an AMD will fry in a hurry, you haven't lived until your Cyrix chip suffers from no airflow. You will likely see nice clean gold pins on the cpu, no apparent motherboard damage and little or no discoloration of the Cyrix chip...it just don't work.

Their slogan was "Born to Run"...

At the shop I worked at, we joked they were "born to burn."

How about just getting an AMD K6-2 CPU for $15?

*shrug* this exercise is kind of a waste of time, but if you're gonna do it, might as well get a decent performing CPU on the board even if it works...
