CPU/RAM Ratio

OS: Win XP SP1
CPU/Ram: P4 2.4 Ghz 1GB 400mhz DDR
Comment:

I recently had a problem with my 2.4Ghz P4 CPU showing it was at 1.79Ghz.
The tech guy I called who built my PC said it was because my MB didn't support 400mhz RAM. I checked online at it supports up to 533.

SO, therefore I went into bios and changed my CPU/DRAM ratio... It was at 100/100 when it was running at 1.79Ghz. Now I changed it to 133/166 and went to look at system properties and it's showing me that yes the system is running at 2.4Ghz (which I believe it's suppose to).

But the thing is, is did I change my setting to optimum performance, do I really have not matching memory, and is the setting I put optimum speed for my PC.

Thank you so much for any reply's. I'm not computer genius so if you can give me a detailed explanation as to what to do, it would be very appreciated. I just want my PC running at optimal performance.

I figured I might clear something up...
The RAM I have is PC3200, which is 200mhz something Everest is showing me. The guy at the store mentioned something about it being 400mhz.
??
I just believe I have a nice system, I'm just misusing it or not using it up to it's full potential.

You should have your speeds the same!If your ram is 400mhz, set it to that speed.Set your cpu speed to 200mhz and downgrade the multiplier accordingly.(400x6=2.4gig).Your multipler can be changed by jumper caps on your motherboard.Check your motherboard manual for instructions.

Also to answer your question about the 200/400mhz thing... Your RAM is DDR400, but the accually clock speed it runs at is 200..buts its called double data rate because it transmits information twice per clock cycle instead of once, which effectively is like 400mhz. Also...There is multiple types of P4 2.5ghz CPUs...do you have any Idea which kind? IE: Northwood, Prescott, Northwood/w Hyperthreading...

Accually...nm that whole CPU question...Its gonna be one of the 533FSB ones.....so, yes you want to run your CPU FSB @ 133mhz... 200 would be overclocking it...(with intel CPU's its like DDR only x4.. so 133x4=533)... As for your memory... I'd run it the fastest you could at..which sounds like 166...so it sounds to me like your good.

AS IF.How is 200mhz overclocking when it has an fsb of 533(533/4.5=2.4gig)He has ddr400 so he needs to set his ram fsb to 200 and his cpu to 200x12 to keep them at a ratio of 1:1.Otherwise he will be underclocking it!

Sorry.
When it comes to intel cpu's and that whole quad pumping thing I get completely lost?

Someone please enlighten us/me.

Your 533mhz is 133mhz x 4 = 533mhz.?.(quad pumped).

indigian..............You may be right my friend.I to am confused by the modern day intel system. If your point is correct he should set his system at........cpu=(133x4)x4.5or133/18(dont know how intel work?)Our friend milos would be better off with amd lol.

fsb=133
multi=18

Making a 2.4ghz cpu.

Intel quadpump?

Making the fsb=533mhz.

As far as I'm concerned fsb=133mhz.?.

The G5 mac has an fsb of 600mhz,but a low multi.

If you heard the spiel,a G5 is the fastest cpu at only 1.8ghz.

The G5 can go up to higher speeds then that my freind. How about dual, 64-bit, 2.5GHz processers and a FSB of 1.25GHz per processor!!! And room for up to 8 gigs of RAM!!

That makes this beast a monster when transfering data throughput = 11gb bandwidth...yikes!!!

It May be the fastest, but Can it run FarCry Or DOOM III, or any other games not supported by the Mac OS?? So much power but what good is it without the software???

We only buy hardware so we can run software on it.

I'm not an Intel guy either, but 533FSB runs at 133mhz, quad pumped...so the correct clock setting for this particular 2.4GHz CPU would be 18 x 133.

RAM is another issue though & you have to consider the CPU's bandwidth. 533FSB = 4266mb/sec bandwidth. For the RAM & CPU to be in balance, you'd either need a single stick of PC4200 running at 266mhz (DDR533), or two sticks of PC2100 in dual channel mode running at 133mhz (DDR266).

If you run your RAM in single channel mode at 166mhz (DDR333), your RAM's max throughput would be 2666mb/sec. Even at 200mhz (DDR400) your max throughput would be 3200mb/sec. So the RAM will bottleneck your system no matter what you set it at....in theory anyway.....

Thanks so much for the replies guy's. Thing is, it looks as if my ratio is locked... I have a "CPU/DRAM" option I can toggle, from like 100/100 to like 100/133 and I think the last option is 133/166. As for the ratio itself, it seems as If i can't even put in user defined settings.

When I look at the system now as I put it back to 100/100 it shows the processor being a Northwood Pentium 4A, but then it's also saying the original clock rate is 2400.

I'm still a tad bit confused guys.

Now when I set the option to 133/166 my system again is showing up as 2.4Ghz with a FSB of 533.

The system is stable for a couple of minutes until I access the HD or run a program, then lights flicker... 1, 2, 3 time and I get a blue screen windows stop error message.

Is this a voltage issue?
