I recently got a 200gb Maxtor 7200rpm EIDE drive. I was running Windows on the 200gb and ended up moving all the files from a 75gb drive to the 200 and putting Windows on the 75. So I am presently using the 200gb drive as my data drive and using the 75gb (Western Digital 7200rpm) as my boot drive. For reference, I am using an ASUS A7V8X board. Since doing all of the moving/reinstalling, I've noticed problems I've never had before. The system is bogging down really bad when I try to access files in certain ways. For example, if I copy a folder from a CD to my boot drive, it copies fine, and anything I'm doing isn't effected at all. If I watch the processor in my system monitor while copying, it only goes up to about 11%. However, if I copy the same folder to my 200gb hard drive, the processor usage shoots up to 100% and anything I'm doing skips really bad nearly to the point of freezing completely. I also noticed the problem when trying to access any of the files from the data drive for transfer to somebody. It appears that it may be something with the 200gb hard drive, but I just bought it brand new less than a month ago from newegg.com. I am running 1gb of DDR400 SDRAM and per CPU-Z, the processor is running at 1905MHz, x11.5 multiplier, 165MHz FSB, and 331MHz bus speed. Anybody have any ideas of what might be causing the slow downs?

I'm a little confused about this 75GB drive...where did it come from? It sounds like you already had the 200GB setup with WinXP, then transfered files from the 75GB to the 200GB, then formatted the 75GB & installed WinXP on it? Did you leave the old Windows installation on the 200GB drive?

How are your drives configured?

It's best not to have 2 HDDs sharing the same cable/channel...it's also best not to have 2 optical drives sharing the same cable/channel. And it's usually recommended to have a burner setup as the 2ndary master.

If you have 3 devices:

prim master = HDD w/OS
prim slave = none
2ndary master = CD/DVD burner
2ndary slave = 2nd HDD

If you have 4 devices:

prim master = HDD w/OS
prim slave = CD or DVD drive
2ndary master = CD/DVD burner
2ndary slave = 2nd HDD

Always use master or slave jumpers...do NOT use cable select. Use 80-wire IDE cables for both channels.

Watch the POST screens to see if your HDs are identified by the correct model number at startup. Especially the 200GB. Does your WinXP CD have at least SP1 on the CD?
