Subject: cpu won't run at proper speed OS: XP CPU/Ram: amd 2400+ / samsung 512mb

Comment: I just built a new computer with a soyo kt400 motherboard and i put in an amd 2400+ processor. The problem is that the computer will only run 1800+ at 750mhz. Can anyone help me out with what settings i need to change in bios. This was right after I reset the cmos, and all the settings were on auto.

Reply: (edit)You probably need to change the fsb settings. Your processor is has a fsb of 266 so make sure its not on 100, or 133

Reply: (edit)I checked in bios and there is no setting for 266. There is something called CPU frequency mode, and the top number I can set for that manually is 255. Is this what I need to change to change the fsb?

Reply: (edit)Clive gave VERY VERY bad advice. If you could set your bus speed to 266 mhz, you'd be overclocking your system by 100% you set the bus to 133 MHz. the real FSB is double the bus speed in AMDs and 4 times in Pentium 4's Mitul Patel, that would be where you set the bus speed. put it at 133 MHz

Reply: (edit)@@ OMG hope he didn't set it to 266 yet. That will yeild an result of 532. @0@. The CPU external clock is calculate by wutever the FSB is showing x2. So it should be 133x2 not 266!!. That will kill your computer in 1 second. Changing it to 133 is right but remember. 133 might not yield a rating of 2400+ if the multiplier of the CPU is not correct. However, that can also be changed in the BIOS. Now this is how it should be. The FSB at 133 with mutiplier at 15. This will then yield: 133 x 15 = 1995. The 2400+ is clock at 2000 but 1995 is the closest none overclocked speed you can get.

Reply: (edit)No, I didnt set it to 266, but I did change the settings to 133 and now its running at the standard 2.0 ghz. Thank you very much everyone. BBut I have another issue. My computer keeps freezing even while I am surfing the internet and doing nothing else. Is that due to overheating?
