CPU use low, Memory use high.

Specs: Windows 7, Gigs
I noticed a large portion of my ram is being used... apparently by nothing. There's no processess showing abnormal or large memory use.

It's not a bad chunk of ram; it's still being recognized and used.
no viruses that MSE caught.

Are we supposed to guess how much RAM you have & how much is being used?

2 gigs and upwards of 90%
1gb of video memory on an nvidia 9 series, and a dual core 3.0ghz

anything else you might need to know?

How did you determine 90% is being used? Task Manager? It should give you a list of every program that's loaded & how much RAM each program is using. 2GB isn't a lot of RAM for Win7.

Task manager, yes.
The list seems incomplete; even with 'show tasks from all users' I only get 30 or 40 tasks, but the list says some 80 are being handled. From the list, it appears I should only be using 1.4 gigs or so... yet my physical memory usage shows upwards of 80%: or 1.6 gigs or more. Whats up with that?

Install Process Explorer from Microsoft to get a better picture of your processes, what is running, etc.
Use msconfig and go to start up tab and uncheck all except Microsoft and antivirus, OK, and restart computer (you can always add back a few later). You should see much less running and less memory used.
Scan with Malwarebytes if you suspect an infection that might have got past your antivirus program (everything cannot be picked up evertime, this will be a double check).
Depending on the programs you run, you may consider adding more memory.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
