Does your bus master on your motherboard work properly? Do you have the newest driver for this Bus Master? Do your IDE channels,both primary and secondary, run with UDMA not with the old PIO? Windows 2000 automatically has the working driver for this Bus Master. There could be a "bottleneck" some where if the above bus master PIO transfer mode is not the cause. But most likely that the bus master not working properly under windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98 and the IDE transfer mode of PIO instead of UDMA is the cause of high CPU usage for just a simple task. Even the newest motherboard does not have the working properly driver for the bus master for the motherboard under windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98. You have to search and download the newest and working driver for this bus master.
