cpu usage 60-100% when playing music

hi i have an acer aspire 3610 laptop. i have just installed windows xp professional although all the drivers are installed correctly i have been suffering from realy bad audio/video playback. i've opened task manager and checked the cpu usage when playing music and it's all over the place, it does the same when i'm not even doing anything. what could this be please help
Did you install individual drivers (chipset, video, audio, network, modem, etc) or are you simply running the generic Windows drivers? If you want full functionality, you need to install the individual drivers.

hey jam. thanks for the reply. i have already installed all the drivers off of the acer website. left the utilities out though,. could that be my mistake or is it something else?

some generic things to check:
1) Did you install ALL drivers? especially, did you install Chipset and ATA drivers?
2) Are all IDE controllers set to "DMA if available"? (check this in Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers -> [every controller listed] -> Advanced Settings tab)
