Comment: Hi. While monitoring my computer with Norton Utilities, I've noticed that the CPU usage is CONSTANTLY ~99-100% even though I'm not touching the computer. The computer is of course really slow. By the past, the CPU usage would obviously fluctuate depending on the applications opened so the present case is really weird.
Any ideas why it is so? Could it be a virus, a hidden application etc? Thanks. By the past, I've

Reply: (edit)Do an ALt-Crtl-Del and stop the active progs one by one, Explorer last! and see what affects the CPU usage. There are various usage tools in the System Tools folder that you can use to check this.

Reply: (edit)Wow! I have the same exact problem. Norton also! I've heard that if the ethernet card is bad that could be the culprit. I also just increased my RAM to 256 MB (from 128) and still no remedy. I am thinking of updating the OS to XP/2K. This is sooo..frustrating.

Reply: (edit)Mine has a similar problem except that it spikes up from approximately 50-55% up to 100% constantly switching back and forth over every interval when displayed as a histogram. I've tried going through the methods listed above and yet it still keeps doing this?!?!?

Reply: (edit)This is also happening to me with XP. It shows the System as using 98% and Task Mgr as using 2%. The computer is so slow. I've uninstalled Norton Anti-virus, unplugged everything one at a time (printer, scanner), there are no viruses, no spyware, and no firewall. It stays at 100% all the time! Help!
