CPU Upgrade

I am upgrading my CPU from a Cyrix 233 to an AMD 500. Do I just re-set the jumpers to the corresponding properties on the MoBo or do I also need to change the BIOS settings? I will also be upgrading the Hd from a 2GB to a 30GB after the CPU is tested. Any comments or advice?

American Megatrends Pentium MMX. My manual lists the AMD K6 but not the K6-2. I think the K6-2 favors a 100 MHZ external clock speed @ 5X. My jumper configs only list up to 75. Can I still run it at 75 @5X?

First make sure you can set the proper vcore voltge for the K6-2. If you can't set it down to the 2.2 volt range, you'll fry the chip. If your board is not rated as a SUPER socket seven it's unlikely you'll be able to use the 500mhz K6-2.

You can run a K6 II with an external clock speed of 75MHz. I believe the 350MHz and above were configured for a 100MHz external clock but will run with a lower clock speed.
I’m still not sure what MOBO you have though.

Thanks all for replies. Mobey, this is the info I get when I run Belarc Advisor for system info; MAINBOARD: American Megatrends 062600 07/15/95. BIOS String is 51-0506-001437-0010111-071595-M571.
Your MoBo is probably a PCChips M571 or a clone of the 571. I have one of these boards & it is for single voltage CPUs. It will NOT run a K6-2...you'll fry the board, the CPU or both!
The max FSB on this board is 83Mhz (though it's not printed on the board) & the max multiplier is 5.5. Your best bet is to get a Pentium 233MMX & experiment with the clocking. I was able to get one to run stable at 290.5 (83 x 3.5)
Summary: If you have onboard video, a CPU upgrade isn't gonna help. You'd need a video card upgrade instead. Find out if you have an AGP slot...if so, someone can help you make a selection based on your budget...

Summary: Is your video card an onboard video card? Because onboard video cards suck off of your motherboards ram. You just need to get a better video card that has at least 32mb of ram and try shooting for tha...
