The cheapest you'll spend is about $125.00 and that is assuming you get an OEM 3.4GHz while retaining your current HSF.

To me that doesn't look like a good investment on a dead platform, unless you intend to hang on to the system for at least another 18-24 months after the CPU upgrade.

Thanks alot for the info I will probable hold on to this unit for a while and yes I usually purchase my upgrading parts from e-bay OEM, I have a grandson that will get this in a year os and I will get me another PC. Do you think that an additional fan and or heat sink will be needed? I have already spent a little on the upgrades over the years and it has been a good unit for all so far. Again I do really appreciate your seggustions.

I doubt that your old mobo supports an 800MHz FSB chip with hyperthreading.

The Faz also made a good point. If your Dell Dimension is a 4400, it wont support anything beyond the 400MHz (100MHz x 4) bus.

If it is a 4500, it should support the 533MHz (133MHz x 4) bus clock and that pretty much limits you to the HT Northwood 3.06GHz (133x23) P4 (478) & you might as well forget the upgrade since that 533MHz Northwood cost way too much than it's actually worth.

What I neglected to ask & you neglected to tell us is, what do you use your system for? Upgrading from a 1.6GHz to say 2.6GHz may not make as huge a difference as you may think, except to your wallet...lol

The max you can go is NW 2.8ghz 400Mhz FSB, but this is going to cost cost... The question is what are you trying to achieve here? Are you trying to get more gaming performance?
