Comment:
hi, please help ive tried to up grade my processor this was my previous set up before upgrade.
win xp pro sp2, matsonic ms9158e+ motherboard, 768mb ram, intel celron 1.80ghz 400fsb, 128 l2 cache, socket 478
after checking motherboard data sheet (www.matsonic.com/mb/productsdata/ms9158e+.htm)
i opted for a pentium 4 3.46ghz 1mb cache 533fsb socket 478
problems i now have are
1) if i right click my computer/properties the cpu is listed as 1.4 ghz
2)the coputer is running very slow
3) sometimes pc wont boot not even to pre boot screens (sory dont know right name for theese)
processor runs fine and is listed as 3.46 ghz on my sisters pc so the processor is fine
matsonic webpage says motherboard supports 400/533 speeds please help iam very stuck and dont know what to do thanks graham

1st of all, are you 100% sure about that CPU? I can't find a S478 P4 3.46GHz 533FSB 1MB CPU listed on Intel's site:

http://processorfinder.intel.com/

2nd, did you make sure your board supports that particular CPU before you bought it?

3rd, did you change the jumpers for the CPU clock? The jumper cap on JP1A1 should be on pins 2-3 & JP1B1 should be on pins 1-2...that will change the FSB from 100MHz (400MHz effective) to 133MHz (533MHz effective).

Going back to my 1st point, if you do have a 3.46GHz/533FSB CPU, the CPU multi would be 26x. So even if you did forget to change the CPU jumper, the CPU would run at 2.6GHz, not 1.4GHz. Something doesn't make sense. Try running CPUZ:

thanks for your quick response jam
yes i had forgot to change the jumpers.
today i have set the jumpers to 133 after doing this the first time i tried to boot nothing happened fan came on but no boot sequence, so powered down tried again and system booted fine, right clicked my comp/properties and cpu displayed as intel pentium 4 6.00ghz
1.8ghz
then 30 seconds later pc shut down and havent been able to boot it up with new cpu since, so havent been able to run cpuid. ive returned jumpers to 100 and put old cpu in and everything works fine. to yourpoints
1)bought cpu on ebay writing on cpu says
INTEL (M) (C)'04
PENTIUM (R)4
3.46GHZ/1M/533
SL7NC MALAY
L501B087

M508C853
0679
ITS DEFFINATLY S478 OR IT WOULDNT FIT IN SOCKET (THATS RIGHT ISNT IT ??)

2)NO THE ONLY CHECKING I DID WAS THAT IT SUPPORTS 533FSB 1.5 -3.06GHZ AND ABOVE PROCESSORS
3)NO I HAD FORGOT TO CHANGE JUMPERS IM PRETTY NEW AT TRYING ANYTHING LIKE THIS

SO IM EVEN MORE LOST NOW.
MY RAM IS ALL STILL 400, I KNOW THIS IS NOT IDEAL BUT I THOUGHT YOU COULD STILL RUN IT AT 533 BUT PERFORMANCE WOULD NOT BE THE BEST (PLANED ON UPGRADING THIS AFTER CPU) COULD THIS BE STOPPING THE SYSTEM BOOTING ?? I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO GET THIS CPU TO WORK ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

Actually, your RAM should run at 133MHz to match the CPU. If you don't plan on overclocking, all you really need is PC2100 (DDR266). You can use PC3200 (DDR400) but it should be clocked down to 133MHz.

However, now that you've posted all the CPU info, it appears that you have a mobile (laptop) CPU, not a desktop CPU...that's the problem:
