My PC has:
Win 98 OS
PIII 450MHz 100FSB Slot-1 512K Cache(Katmai?)
Asus P2B-AE motherboard
with Intel 440BX/ZX chipset
and AWARD v4.51PG BIOSI want to upgrade the CPU to a higher speed and then install Win XP.
1. Are all PIII 100FSB Slot-1(SECC 2) CPU's compatible with this motherboard? Is there any other specifiction I should look for - like stepping and pin-SECC 2?
2. I found in on-line stores
PIII 800EMHz 256K 100MHz FSB Slot-1 CPU($95)
PIII 750EMHz 256K 100MHz FSB Slot-1 CPU($71)Is the 800MHz worth the price difference?
Thanks in advance

uhhhh, Slot1 maxed out at about 500MHz
Your probly looking at overdrives.
And, Its not worth it.
Spend a bit more and get a new mainboard with about 1GHz AMD and youll be happy.
Go with AMD, a 1.4GHz Duron is like $45.

From the Intel specs in the link below:
The 500-600 MHz max-out is for .25 micron chips.
The 750E and 800E CPU's are Slot-1(SECC 2)with .18 micron technology (Coppermine?)

You can get a Slot-1 to Socket 370 adapter for about $10
If you wanna stick with Slot-1, look at these:

The above site scanned my PC and said the computer cannot be upgraded because of hardware limitations.
I am scrubbing the idea of upgrading the CPU.

Do NOT take the word of a software program!
If you wanna know what your board is capable of handling, go to the Asus website.
Here's a link to the archive list of Slot-1 boards:

Here's a pic of the slot-1 to 370 adapter:

Keep in mind you can get an Athlon XP 2000 motherboard, CPU, and Fan for as little as $110 before you buy an overdrive CPU! That will blow the pants off anything you could put in that motherboard you have now.
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

While the above statement is true, you must also add new RAM & a PSU to that list, so that brings the cost up at least another $100

RAM? yes, power supply, not necessarily. My gaming dedicated server is running a 300W I used back on my Celeron 566 @ 850MHz rig. Works fine.

Evergreen also sells kits that work fine to upgrade a slot II CPU to a Celeron up to 1.4 GHz. I bought their 1.2 GHz kit and it was a snap to install. However, the CPU did fail after 1 year when the warranty was up :-(. Here is a link
