Comment:
um...is a pentium 4 3.0 ghz (Prescott) CPU too hot if it reaches say...74 degrees (Celcius)?
if it is uh, any ideas on why it can be so hot?

yeah it's hot. Prescotts runs hot as it is. Stock cooling it runs between 60~70 degree Celcius. If you want it to run cooler, then you are going to have to do 2 things

Cleaning out your system from dust will drop your system and cpu temp a few degrees Celcius.

Buy some aftermarket case fans like some Antec pro series which can drop your cpu and system temps 5~10 degree Celius or more.

go to google.com and search for "throttlewatch"... If your system is not throttling under 74C, then there is nothing to worry about... But if it is throttling, then cleaning up your fans, re-apply thermalpaste like arctic silver 5 and having a exhaust fan below power supply will reduce the temperature... Also make sure your cables are wrapped so nothing is blocking the fan...
