Hi Guys,

I have been having problems with my pc. For some strange reason it keeps freezing. It seems like as if the cpu shuts down - not sure though.

Things that I have already done.

1)Fresh installation of winxp incase the problem was due to bad drivers/program.

2)Took all the extra devices out i.e. dvd rom, cd writer, floppy, soundcard.

3)Bought new ddr ram, hard drive and power supply

4) Done the virus scan, online scan, adaware, search and destroy and god knows what else

It’s either my cpu or the motherboard that is playing up. The fan on cpu is standard intel make that came with it in a retail box.

In bios it only displays system and cpu fan speed and not temperature option under system health. CPU fan speed is 2518 RPM.

My motherboard is gigabyte ga-8st and after checking the spec it does have temperature censure.

I've downloaded AIDA32, the temperature for cpu is very inconsistence, its never stable. Within seconds it changes from 35c to 65c and then 125c and then back down and so on. It never stays near one figure. I am not sure how accurate is this.

Anyone with any ideas? Thanks

Since you have a Gigabyte board, you should be using Gigabyte software to monitor your temps. If you don't have EasyTune, go to the Gigabyte site & download it. Or you could try one of these:

MotherBoard Monitor 5
SpeedFan
Everest Home Edition

Gamer Edition
WinME/WinXP Pro

does the actual heatsink feel very warm to hot? if not, then it's a temp reporting issue... a lot of mobos have it

you could go with a hardware solution, it's a multi-function diplay unit that fills up a 5.25 inch drive bay and has like 3 temp sensors, place one as close as you can to the cpu's core without interfering with the seating, another on your video card's gpu and with the 3rd, just hang it freely in the case to get ambient air temps...

BTW, the temp is not stable because you have a P-4. It throttles back when it gets hot. And with a fan to protect it that is only running at " 2518 RPM" like you said, it would probably have to be about ten inches in diameter, which it is not.

Good luck!
