Hi i'm wondering if i need a new heat sink. my cpu fan speeds up sometimes then goes back to normal. I check hardware Monitor in Bios Setup. The CPU reads at 56c to 60c, CPU fan speed is 1911. This is when fan speed is normal and quiet. CPu is a Intel P4 515 2.93Ghz 533mhz fsb.
CPU past should last a good few years, unless you remove the heat sink or move it and it dislodges. Dust is most likely your problem, you should be able to just remove the fan if its the Standard Intel sink without knocking it, and be able to remove the dust with compressed air and paint brush. Also checking you CPU as a "Intel P4 5 15" it indicates it as being a "Prescott" which being nicknamed "hot potato" should lead you to my next point, it runs hot anyhow, and so them load temps aren't terrible considering standard heat sink! good luck 02coled

Make sure you are running case fans on that box for those press-hottts, i am and it makes the whole system cool down. I run two Prescott's, and rear case fans help a lot.
