Comment:

My system was overheating and it caused my processor to run at half it's speed.

AMD K6-2 400MHZ
Asus P5A-B
Asus Geforce v6600 SGRAM 32M
256M RAM
SB Live Sound
3Com Etherlink XL 10/100 PCI NIC

No jumpers were changed(all set correctly to run at 400MHZ).I am currently at 200MHZ.

I went out and bought a few fans and installed them.Than I updated my bios.I am still stuck at 200MHZ.

What could the problem be?A jumper short?Power Supply?

My PSU is 300W btw

That's an odd one. What were your temps? The max for a K6-2 is 65C...& the K6-2 doesn't "power down" when it's overheated like the P4 does. Did you make any hardware changes about the time this happened? Have you experimented with the jumper settings at all? I'm not familiar with your board but I'm guessing that you have it setup as 4.0 x 100fsb...just for the hell of it, why not try it at 2.0 x 66fsb (the 2.0x will be seen as 6.0x & you'll still be at 400).

do you have another mobo that you can test the chip out in? may be a bad mobo as well (at least those chips are only about $20 now). IF you can find one, get a K6-III 400 (they blow away the K6-II 550....

I just did a search to check out your mobo specs. 13 separate jumper settings?!?!?

"Count 'em. There are 13 jumper settings! 13 ways to have a problem and 13 things to check."

This site actually tells how to set it up for a K6-2/400...you might wanna take a look...

I tried overclocking and underclocking, but it will not let me(pc just freezes). As far as temps, they WERE in the mid 70's,but after I installed these fans, temp went down drastically(in the 40's now).

If you check out the manual, there's a section on CPU Slow Down, where it will drop the cpu speed when temperature gets too high.It than says it will restore to normal when temperature is at a safe level. But it doesn't restore it.

No hardware changes btw

This board is over 5 years old anyways.Maybe it's time for an upgrade.PC show coming to town next month.I'm sure I can get a barebone for under $200.

Any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks
