Comment: Hi ..... I have a really big problem right now... you know that setup screen you can go into when your CPU starts up, where u can set boot devices and all sorts of other stuff like hardware prefs. (master/slave disks) and ect... I lost my password to that, i know im such a moron...i set the password not thiking it was for that actual screen...and then lost it....but... after disabling my on-board soundcard to enable my newly puchased m-audio quattro to run alone unaffected by another sound device, only to realise linux does not support m-audio products or vice versa. This may not seem very bad but, trust me i am really a "audio" person and this is really killing me and i REALLY need my sound back. THX to anyone who anyone who took the time to read this and extra kudos in advance to anyone who can help me!

Reply: (edit)ehm...well i think so... but im really not familliar with these hardware-type opperations, but basicly what im trying to do is remove that password that prevents me from getting in to my setup screen which u usealy get to by pressing ESC before the boot loader kicks in. (im on a a AMD athlonXP running red hat 9 -hense the boot loader) but yeah i think what ur talking about is what im looking for...im tearing through my manual to see if cant find some default that i can use right now... but plz... i think your idea can really help so go ahead and enlighten me.

Reply: (edit)Remove the CMOS battery for about 30 seconds and return it back to its rightful place. You should be able to get in the BIOS after that. __________________________________________________________ The greatest risk is not taking one

Reply: (edit)The default password is no password, so even if you reset the configuration data and every setting returns to default, there is no BIOS password @ default. __________________________________________________________ The greatest risk is not taking one

Reply: (edit)If by chance that doesn't work, post back the motherboard you have and you may be able to get some additional help. Your trick of losing a bios password is not uncommon and many motherboard manufacturers have a back door to get you in. Hopefully, resetting the bios to defaults will work. If you've also lost the motherboard user manual, it's usually available for download from the manufacturer. Good luck, Skip

Reply: (edit)Go on the website for the manufacturers of the motherboard. You should be able to download a .pdf diagram of your motherboard if you need help finding the CMOS jumper. Then you can reset the CMOS the proper way. B T F I C O H L N O B E Y- G W

Reply: (edit)If you don't wanna go thru the hassle of opening up your box & removing the battery or setting the ClearCMOS jumper, download & run this program called KILLCMOS...it will wipeout the password & reset all your BIOS settings to the defaults...... http://www.utilitygeek.com/details.php?fileid=82
