CPU Replacement Problems

Hi. The cpu on my bro's comp fried, so I ordered a replacement for it. It's a compaq computer. It had an Athlon 2400+ in it, and I intended to replace it with a Sempron 2300+. I put the new cpu in, and it gets to the compaq screen now, and I can get into the bios, but it won't boot to disk or even to the cd-rom. Any suggestions or questions?

Athlon 2400+ 266fsb
Sempron 2300+ 333fsb
Quite obvious why it is not working, if the Compaq does not support Sempron you will have to find out what alternative there is. Athlon 266fsb are now obsolete, could try EBAY?

Compaqs are proprietary and quite often use 'non-standard' hardware.
Do you have the Model Number ?

The Compaq uses a propriatery Power Supply rated at 200W, this is not man enough for modem PC's.

So I could buy a new mobo and put the new cpu in it and be fine right? What would I need a new case for btw?

I doubt it's a CPU problem. Even if your Compaq doesn't officially support the 333FSB Sempron, it would simply run at 266FSB. The CPU clock speed would drop to 1267MHz (9.5 x 133MHz) instead of 1583MHz (9.5 x 166MHz). I suspect there's something else wrong with the system. Don't just randomly buy parts...troubleshoot!

Go ahead and plan on a new case, and a new power supply, and probably some new RAM to go with it, etc.
Compaq's are not upgradeable. Better and cheaper to start fresh.
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

A new problem has arisen. I ordered the new mobo (one that is compatible with the new sempron, and put it in the old compaq case, and it fit all right. I had to use the old screws because the mobo was oem and didn't come with any. But now, when I try to turn the comp on, it just shuts down automatically. I plug the power in and the green light in the back comes on, but whenever I try to turn the comp on, the LED from the case fan flashes on for an instant and the cpu fan flickers for an instant, but then the green light in the back turns off also. Do you think the mobo is grounding somewhere? Think I should just get a new case and psu?
