There are at least 4 different ways to update the BIOS....only ONE of them is done from within Windows. The other methods are from a CD, floppy or USB thumbdrive.

BTW, I still say you're wasting your money getting the Q6700 instead of the Q6600.

usb cd and floppy wont work if the window is not istalled how can i run bios update with usb or cd if the window is not installed??

u want me to get q6600 instead of q6700 and then over clock it right well if i do over clock i need new mobo and better heatsink and what about this intel mobo it will be useless if i get new mobo with over clocking option so intead of buying new mobo and heatsink y not just buy q6700 even if i have to pay more money then the new mobo and heatsink i will do it coz at least then my intel mobo will be in use this way

if the processor will not work then my pc will not start right it means that even without the windows i cant use usb or cd coz if the proseeor will not work without the latest bios the pc will not start what the hell its consufing as hell

"usb cd and floppy wont work if the window is not istalled"

It does NOT have to be done from within Windows! Did you bother to check the links I posted? The BIOS files you need to download are available thru the Intel link, along with an explanation about how to perform the flash. Basically, you download the appropriate files, then copy them to either a bootable CD, USB thumbdrive or floppy drive, then simply boot off the media & perform the flash. Windows does NOT have to be installed! Have you ever updated a BIOS before? Personally, I have NEVER flashed from Windows...I've always done it from a bootable floppy. I've updated dozens of BIOS in my "career" & so far, have never had a problem.

And getting back to the processor choice...the Q6700 costs over $250 more than the Q6600, but the performance difference is minimal. You'd be needlessly spending the extra money for a puny 0.22GHz increase in CPU speed. It isn't worth it. I don't understand how you cannot see that?

What you *could* do is sell the motherboard you have. NEWEGG has it for $125, TIGERDIRECT has it for $110. If you're lucky, you can sell yours for about $100. Then you can take that $100 plus the $250 you save buy getting the 6600 instead of the 6700 & invest in a decent motherboard. Then once you learn about overclocking, you'll be able to crank that Q6600 to Q6700 speed & beyond. BTW, you do NOT need a special HSF to overclock...as long as you overclock "responsibly", the stock Intel unit will be fine.

What makes you so sure your current BIOS version won't recognize a Q6700? or even a Q6600? The Intel site says the Quad is supported. Unless I missed it, I didn't see anything stating a certain BIOS version was necessary. Do you know which version you have?

Here's a list of all the versions released for your board & a descript of what each one "fixes". Several of them say "update processor report" but none of them list specific CPUs.

Looks like you're gonna go for the Q6700 anyway. I think it's bad move & a total waste of money, but it's your call.

I suggest you contact Intel support & see what they tell you regarding that CPU & the older BIOS. It may simply be a matter of recognition. For example, some AMD boards will bootup & run with an "unsupported" CPU installed. On the POST screen it will say, "unknown processor" but once the BIOS is updated, the CPU is properly identified.
