Greetings. I'm trying to track down some info. I just purchased a processor online, and I'm trying to decide if it's what I ordered. I ordered an Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton). Unfortunately, when I installed it, it was recognized (in BIOS and Windows) as a 2200+. Needless to say, I'm a little confused. I should mention that this was a pull. I cleaned off the top with acetone, and in the process I think I removed a connection the previous owner made on the bridges (to unlock it, I guess).

I ran CPU-Z, and the output is here:
http://home.comcast.net/~donandmitzie/output.txt

For a while I was worried I was sold a lower-rated processor, but here's the catch. I can tell from the physical shape of the die that it's a Barton core (sorry, can't get a photo or serial numbers, as it's installed at the moment). They didn't even make Bartons that slow, did they? Nor in 133MHz FSB varieties.

Here's what I notice: if you change the FSB from 133 to 166, the 1666 MHz internal clock becomes 2079 MHz... the frequency of a Barton 2800+.

So... if everything I've said so far is true... what's holding me back? My motherboard (Gigabyte GA-7VAXP) supports the processor, and has the latest BIOS (F15, despite what the CPU-Z output says). Everything in the system supposedly supports the 166MHz FSB. What's holding me back? It's not a mobo jumper setting... the only FSB setting is between 100MHz and "Auto", and it's on the latter.

Ideas?

Thanks,
David Murphy

*smacks forehead*

It's always right after I ask for help...

I reread the manual, and I don't know if I was looking at the wrong one last night or what... but in fact, the FSB is controlled by on-board switches. *sigh*

Nothing to see here... :p

If there was an unlock on the cpu maybe you
shold ask the seller how it was done and
how fast he had it running!

Maybe you're lucky and got a nice one that
can be OCed quite high and got even more
for your money than you realised!
