Normally my cpu runs at a very decent temp idle (around 37-43, a little higher in the hotter weather). And just tonight out of nowhere it starts to slowly overheat until it gets higher and higher and i have to turn it off. I dont have a hardware moniter on my computer so i use the one in the bios. I have my cpu fan speed at 5500rpm and the cpu still overheats slowly, going from at start and raising about 1 degree every seconds. when it gets around 55 and i turn it off. I took off the heatsink and the layer of silicon gel was just as it looked the day i put it on.

For something like this to happen completely random like that, it confused me, which is why im here.

0. Does the fan stop spinning after a while?
1. Is the fan or heatsink clogged up (dirt)?
2. Is the heatsink seated correctly?

Clean out the fan and the heatsink thoroughly, clean off and reapply some thermal film between the CPU and the heatsink then reinstall the heatsink and fan back, BTW make sure nothing is wrong with the fan's efficiency spin wise.

No i watch the cpu any time im not watching the temp. there is a bit of dust on the fan , ill try cleaning that off.

My cpu fan i can control the speek it goes by turning a knob, so i can pump it up as high as it goes at will. Not only watching it, but listening to it, you can tell it is spinning properly(A fan spinning at 5500 rpm is REALLY loud).

As for Thermal Film, I barely have any left so if the cleaning doesnt work, ill have to go out and buy some more =/. Get back to ya on if it works or not.

Well the cpu is appearing to heat up liek it was before but i checked it out after only a little while and it was only at 49 degrees, so thats not too bad, i would have left it on longer but i smelled burning. coincidentally something got stuck in the motor of my AC and that was the burning. Scared the hell out of me.

anyway, i tested it again for 15 minutes and the temperature stayed around the same at 4400 rpm and is going lower slowly at 5500 rpm. MY room is about 95 degrees right now because of no ventilation so the cooling is probably affected by that. Thanks for the help. If problem continues to occur ill be back here soon =P.

Remember...you cannot overheat a P4 to the point of failure. It has built-in thermal protection circuitry

If your system is stable, don't worry about it. 55C is well within range. In fact, i have tried about 7 different heatsinks with AS 3, 5, ceramique and I idle 55C, and load goes to 65-68, seems high, but I am stable. Feel the heatsink, it should be warm, however not burning. Cheers

my cpu was at 39-45 all the time. all of the sudden it jumped up to 90 C !!!!!!!!!! and of course the pc shut down. i cant even turn it on anymore, it shuts down all the time. so i bought a new fan, and it went down to 75 C, still high... and im only able to run my pc in safe mode. i ve also got 2 new additional fans on the back of my pc (inside of course)... still at 73-75 C !!! Maybe the problem is not in the fans?
