Here guys, i asked a quesiton on so the forum "Windows xp" so ill ask it again here:
thx guys, jam here you go:
ECS 741GX-M Motherboard (200/266/333)
Supports AMD Athlon/Duron/Athlon xp/Semptron
Im using an AMD Athlon 1000 (5x 200)
its not O'cd and my memory is : Kingston 256MB DDR 400 (PC3200) CL2.5 (granteed compatible with this mobo! (thx crucial.com!)
My hd is a quantum fireball something 40
my graphics is a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128)
Im using my onboard Realtek 6-codec sound
My psu is a 350W that came with the case (im ordering a 500)
Im getting a new AMD Duron 1100
Im getting 1GB (2x512) RAM
as i stated above and for all my previous posts/replies
It dosnt only not work in my comp but in 15! other mobos (Asus,HP,ECS, and Gigabyte mobo's)
Ive triede other memory sticks and all!
i even reinstall on my friends 160GB Seagate HDD
IT DOES NOT WORK WITH XP/2K03!
WHY??? no one so far has answered my original question!!!!!
Come on jam, i know ur popular here and all technical (i asked you years ago about BIOS flashing!!!)
My neighbour is a Computer reseller, hes been in buissness for over 50yrs! (KM Computers)
He has tested all my computer parts, CPU, psu, memory, and hdd as well as other stuff im probably forgetting
Look im not a n00b, and im no expert but if this CPU is not working in 15 mobo's with xp/2k03 then u can still suggest my comp is f***ed???
My only prob now with my comp is i need a better psu to support my all powerful (to me anyways) Graphics card!
Im geting a Duron becasue you obviously have no intention of hleping me FIND the problem, ITS THE CPU!!!! email my neighbour and he'll explain it to you : larryc@videotron.ca
PLZ HELP!!!
Anyways it turns out my CPU is runnig at 99c(210F)
I have a fan and heatisink on but am i missing something or do i need a better heatsink/fan???
Why is the hell would my cpu run so hot? it works fien in windows 98/2k/95/me etc but nmot in windows xp or in server 2003?
Any ideas?

Thx in advance!!!

There is so much wrong with what you wrote that I don't know where to begin, but I'll start by telling you how to fix your problem...update your BIOS. Look what the latest release fixes:

"Patch old K7 CPU without thermal diode can not install XP"

Like I said before...it is NOT a CPU issue & it never was! You simply have a crappy board with a crappy SiS chipset & a crappy BIOS.

And if you're running your Athlon 1000 at 5 x 200MHz, you ARE overclocking! Did you unlock it or was it factory unlocked? Is it the 100MHz (200FSB) or 133MHz (266FSB) version?

You probably don't need a new PSU either unless your 350W unit has less than 16A on +12v rail. I'm running 350W on both my AXP/nForce2 & Sempron/KT600 rigs (22A on +12v)...& my Duron/KT133E & Athlon Tbird/KT133A rigs use 250W units (16A on +12v). All are overclocked with no problems...

Your processor is not running at 99°C. If at default speeds, you're likely running at the default of 10X100 or 7.5X133.

Where are you getting the 5X200 info? Of the 4 Athlon 1000's made, 3 ran at 100Mhz and 1 ran at 133Mhz.

Follow the advice from jam.

"...you're likely running at the default of 10X100...Where are you getting the 5X200 info?"

Most likely the confusion is between "actual" vs "effective" clock settings. His board doesn't even support 200MHz (400FSB)...it supports "(200/266/333)". I should have picked up on that. His CPU is probably clocked at 10 x 100MHz (200FSB). Regardless, the updated BIOS should fix his problem....

thx jm ur a lifesavor,
listen i know i might have sounded like an idiot but im not and im sory if i took s--- out on you, anyways im scared to upgrade my bios because i have killed 4 mobo's (old P1's) by flashing the BIOS
I have already ordered more memory and the new PSU so i cant sotp it now, anyways im 15 with almost no $$ so i got the cheapest board i could get, (for 50$ it aint bad compared to my p1-233 i had with 384MB RAM!)
I am getting all this info from AIDA32, Sisoft sandra 2003, and everest home
But if it is my bios then why would my athlon 900 (9x100) work fine and my athlon (5x200) not work???
My mobo only supports up to 333FSB so 200 is alright anyways but why would it work with windows 9x/2k?
And why are all my programs saying its running @ 99c???
Also I had thermal paste on this but for some reason it aint on no more, instead its stuck on the heatsink so should i get more thermal paste and WHERE??? my store: THe source (was Radioshack) says they dont sell it!!!
So should i upgrade my bios and why would my friend also have about 10-20CPU's he tried on other mobo's that don't run with XP???
I either get random restarts during boot up of random restarts any rnadom time or a "Machine Check Exception" error??
How can i safely upgrade my bios with 100% chance of not screwing anything up???
Thx guys

Thx in advance!!!

Take another look at what the latest BIOS fixes..."Patch old K7 CPU without thermal diode can not install XP"

Your Athlon 1000 is an "old K7 CPU" which apparently does not have a thermal diode. That would explain the false temp reading of 99C. (I'm guessing that this temp reading somehow prevents WinXP from installing). AMD rates your CPU's "max die temp" at 90C..if it was actually 99C, the CPU would cease to function. I should have recommended that you try the "touch method". At 99C your heatsink would have been "VERY HOT" to the touch! But I'm sure if you would have carefully touched it, you would have found that it was warm but not "VERY HOT"...it's a crude method, but it would have given you a general idea of the temp.

As for the BIOS flash...there are a few different methods of doing it. Personally, I prefer the DOS method of flashing & that's the method I'm going to explain:

Start by downloading the necessary BIOS & flash utility files from the ECS website:

http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/downloads_main.cfm?to=Motherboard

Both files are in zip format & will have to be unzipped 1st.

1. copy the new BIOS (7GM831.BIN) & DOS flash utility (AWD860I.EXE) to a freshly formatted floppy

2. if you don't already have a WinME boot floppy, go to bootdisk.com & download the file to create one (get the OEM version)

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

3. check your BIOS settings...make sure the floppy is set as the 1st boot device

4. boot off the WinME boot floppy that you just created & choose option #4 - Minimal Boot. When it stops at the A:\> prompt, remove the boot floppy & insert the floppy with the BIOS files

5. at the A:\> prompt, type AWD860I & hit ENTER...like so

A:\>AWD860I [enter]

That will start the flash utility. From there, you just have to follow the instructions.

File to Program: 7GM831.BIN

Do You Want To Save BIOS? Y

Save BIOS As: OLDBIOS.BIN

Are You Sure To Program? Y

Then just wait for a message that says, Flashing Complete, Remove Disk & Hit F1.

When it reboots, go directly into the BIOS & double check all the settings...some may have changed, or you may even find that there are some new choices. Correct them as necessary, then try to install WinXP.

thx ill try but still why would my athlon 900 work when it is also having a false reading of 99c?
It was an Athlon 900Mhz (9x100) (4.5x200)
Any ideas on that?

"Athlon 900Mhz (9x100) (4.5x200)"

1st of all, put that 200 number to rest...it's strictly theoretical. Your CPU's default multiplier setting is 9x (not 4.5x) & your FSB setting is 100MHz (not 200).

As for your problem, I thought for sure you had an older BIOS & the update would fix it.

I just downloaded the manual & had a look at the BIOS section...your options are very limited. This is definitely not a board for overclocking. Here's a couple of settings to double check...

Under PC Health Status:

Shutdown Temperature = Disabled**

** seeing as how your temp is being reported as 99C, you probably have this disabled already, if not, disable it (at least temporarily while troubleshooting)

Under Frequency/Voltage Control:

Auto Detect DIMM/PCI Clk = Enabled
Spread Spectrum = Disabled
CPU Frequency = 100
CPU: DRAM Frequency Ratio = 1:1

And make sure all settings relating to the onboard video are disabled.

Thxjam but for some reason in my BIOS in PC Health Status, I don't have the option with shutdown temperature or the CPU Temperature??
I already have my setting for my memory and CPU set like that
This board disables the onboard graphics when u insert an AGP card
Anything else?

Thx in advance!!!

If you don't have a CPU temp in the BIOS, how are you coming up with this 99C reading?

If you want my suggestion, remove that crappy SiS based board & use it for target practice, then get a decent board based on the nForce2 or KT600 chipset. Here's a couple of refurbed DFI boards for under $35 shipped:

His neighbor's been in the computer business since 1955? I don't think computers even existed outside the U.S. military at that point. Certainly no "home" computers even existed before the late seventies. Either you're lying or the old man living next to you is insane.

Im not lying he told me he was in the buissness since before i was born (im 15) and around when my parents were teens (in the 60's-70's)
So how is that as a rough time estimate is it long, what kind of comps were there in thw 70's. Hell i know M$ only came into buissness in 1985!!!!
