I have a AMD Athlon 1600+ on motherboard KT7 or KT7A. My problem is that the speed of the proccessor varies constantly. When I start the computer it reads 336-357-872-1100-1200-1500 mhz etc.......When it is slow I cannot connect to Internet and my clock, right hand side down the screen, reads 2 hours more in 30 minutes. Certain games are slower by 6 times than what should be. Is the problem CPU or Motherboard. I will greatly appreciate your help and I thank you. André

If the time in your tray is misbehaving I would suspect the CMOS battery on the motherboard. It's rather like a watch battery and is easily changed.

It is obviously the system timer. The system timer does two things - controls your time of day clock and your cpu clock. Since both are erratic, you should replace this chip. Hopefully you won't have to replace the whole motherboard.

Bob - you are like the snl pathological liar. First, I don't think there is any timer that controls the cpu clock and time of day clock. Second, if the cpu clock were all over the map like this the machine would not even boot.
