Hey guys! I think i've got a real problem with my CPU and mobo. Just brought an Athlon XP2000+ and installed it. Upon boot up.. the motherboard kept tellin me the CPU was really hot! 80+ degrees celcius!!! And it auto shut down a few times too... so had to manually lower the cpu speed on the mobo so it won't heat up so quick. By the way.. i do have heatsink and fan! A friend told me i might have the heatsink put in the wrong way! (there's a ledge that u're supposed to put in line!) So I turned it round... after setting up again and turning on... the monitor didn't come on... nothing... could only hear the disk drives and LED's on..... and HDD activity stops after 20 secs... so... is the chip fried??? Or did i damage the mobo while installing the chip the second time?? Pls help guys.. quite worried!

lowering the cpu speed with the heatsink being in wrong wont do much to help. It stills heats up very quickly as you have learned. Take the cpu out of the motherboard and inspect it for burns. Or smell it. That it being new it shouldnt have any burnt smell to it. If it does then its probably fried. Your motherboard should be ok.

lol, i know the feeling...
did it work after you manually decreased the speed? (did you test if after that?) if not then reset your bios (usually with a jumper, read the motherboard manual).
If you tested it before then do what Mr. P4sucks says.

Reset BIOS to default. If it won’t boot, remove the HSF and examine the core for chips.

hey guys!
Thanks for all the advice.. went to see some computer experts who told me to connect the case speaker to the motherboard and listen for beeps after switching on the computer. I heard none... so can I assume that it's the motherboard that's bust???

Definitely not the speaker that's bust... cos after switching with my old motherboard, it worked fine....

Tricky stuff computers are!!!

Cheers
