Is this a new rig ???

Did you check the bios setings for the cpu ?

Is this a fresh load of windows or not ??

Did you update the bios with the latest available version from the manufacturers web site before installing the OS??

It is a new rig, I've checked the bios...well I don't really know what I'm looking for... it is a fresh load of windows... I should also say that I think (not entirely sure) that this happened after I upgraded the RAM, before I used a single 512 PC2700 and the ones I use now are 512x2 PC3200's

Did you configure the ram modules on a dual chanel or single chanel operation ??

I did notice that ecs have a rather large bios update for that board which deals with the p4 cpu stepping code, and a number of other problems with temperature etc.

Changing ram should not cause the problem that you describe, well not to the best of my knowlendge but the configuration with 2 modules may have.

Can you pls have a look at the bios version of your board, it should show up on the post screen when you first start the computer, also can you pls post what you have in your rig and how you have configured it..

That board you have has 2 version's the revison 1.1 and revision 1.2 which one is yours ??

You should find this information next to the ram slots..

The only way the CPU could be running at the wrong speed would be if the FSB has changed. Your CPU should be clocked at 16 x 200MHz...if it's downclocked to 2.78GHz, the FSB must have somehow dropped to about 174MHz?

In the bios the FSB is at 200MHz and it isn't an option that's changable, I don't know if my modules are configured dual or single...my computer uses a MX440 sadly, 512x2 pc3200 RAM 3.20 GHz 160gig SATA hard drive, a dvd burner, cd burner, floppy drive... I don't know if that helps, in the bios the version is 02.5x I'll need to check what number the x is, but right now I have work... I'll post later.

"the FSB is at 200MHz and it isn't an option that's changable"

I suggest you do some reading about your board...it looks likes the BIOS settings are highly configurable. Did you read thru the manual?

The following site has a review of your board, complete with screenshots of the BIOS. It states that the FSB is adjustable in 1MHz increments:

I don't know if it the jumper settings on my mobo, the guide isn't very helpful I'd like to put a screen shot of my systeminfo after running cmd...it says I have 2 processors?

Showing 2 cpu units is normal for a HT enabled p4.

I am not familiar with you mobo I will need to read the instruction manual, I will down load when I get home, and llok see.

What jumpers are you refering to ??

But if I were you about now I would be shutting the rig down, disconect the power cord and reset the cmos. Eather by using the jumper on the mother board or by removing the mother board battery for a few minutes.

In addition I would make sure that the ram is located in ram slot 0 and ram slot 0A or rams lot 2 or 2A just dpends how the manufcaturer has marked them.

There should me some markings next to the ram slots on the board but the book should also tell you.

The other way to know is by the colour, one set should be light colour the other set should be dark colour. The modules go inot the 1st light colour slot and 1st dark colour slot.

If they are marked with, light colour, than dark colour, than light colour, and than dark colour.

The ram modules will go into the two light colour slots.

The numbering of the ram slots is usaly from the processor outward, in other words no 1 or no 0 slot will be the one closest to the cpu.

The motherboard only has 2 slots for RAM, well 4 slots but only 2 useable for DDR1 the other 2 for DDR2, I would try to reset my cmos with jumpers but I don't know how, when you look it up can you please tell me. Thank you for taking time to help me with this problem.

Sorry took so long to reply.

In reference to resting the bios on your board.

As I dont now which revision board you have I will quote the refrence from version 1.1 I supect it should be about the same.

You have 2 jumper settings on the board one to reset the bios and the other which write protects the bios.

The one you need to use is located just below the battery.

It should be a 3 pin post with a jumper spaning the midle pin and one of the end pins, unless you have moved the jumper it is in normal operation mode.

To reste the bios disconect the power cord from the wall, remove the jumper from the current setting ( jumper will be over pins 1 and 2 ) and slide it over the midle and the current free pin on the other end ( pins 2 and 3 )

Leave the jumper there for about 15 to 20 seconds, than place the jumper back on to pins 1 and 2.

Once that is done plug the power cord back ino the wall, and press the power button on the computer. When you see the first post on the screen press the Delete key that will get you back inot the bios.

You will need to set the bios up again the way it was EG clock date etc.

Refer to your mother board manual for instructions.

When you get to the cpu insforamtion the frequency should be showing 200mhz and the ratio valuse should be rading 16 for a 3.2 ghz cpu.

Both settings in the bios for the ratio should be the same, the actual and cmos settings should have the same number.

Hope that helps

Oh, thanks for the help...the problem was that there never was a jumper there, I'm going to try to locate some from my old mobo, actually there are no jumpers at all in this mobo...I don't know why and the thing is that the frequency is 200mhz it just doesn't show the ratio value...is it possible that to show the ratio value you must have the jumpers on correctly?

yes that may be possible.

Usualy when a board has a reset pins for the bios the jumper is normaly on it,this instructs the bios in what operation mode it should be in. But that sometimes depends on the manufacturer.

But before you do anything you must check what revision version is your board.

In my 3rd post I asked the quaestion about this. It will be written on your board in white lettering.

Something like this. REV 1.1 or 1.2 or 2.0 whichever the number is.

Janos, I would like to say one thing, THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, I followed your instructions and reseted the bios with the jumpers, it told me to set everything again and when I booted up, well it showed my speed back at 3.19 but it has a little extra on the bottom saying "Physical Address Extention" is that bad? Heres a screen shot http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/Finalfantasypep/CPUSPEED.jpg

Glad to see all worked OK for you.

I ma not sure what that information means, first time I have seen that with an intell cpu.

But as long as it working OK thats the main thing. I built one very similar only about a week ago using an intel board but I dont remember seeing that information, but I didnt take much notice to be honest.

I will try and find out what its all about, but in the mean time its great your rig is working OK..

And you are welcome that is what we are here for.

The difference between 1.1 and 1.2 or later may be minor but enough to require a design change notification.

Usualy it is a chnage to the hardware on the mother board or the actual printed circuit board, which may require a slightly different bios configuartion.

These changes may not always be visible to us, but must be noted to identify the engineering changes.

A common practice with mother board manufacturers and many other items we use, such as tv models, videos, cars etc.

The only way to find out what the difference is between the two boards of the type you have is to check the board layout diagarm and specifications, or it could just be a major micro code change, for the bios.

Hope that helps

Try right click on desktop, go to properties, then click on screen saver, there you should see power options, then change the power setting from desktop/laptop/max power saving to always on.. Now you should able to see in system properties 3.2Ghz CPU P4... If you change to power saving, sometimes it will show 2.8Ghz... Typical for Prescott CPU and AThlon 64CPU with clock throttle when CPU is not at 100%
