Hi!
I get the message "CPU is unworkable or has changed. Please check soft menu" when I boot my computer. When I press F1 everything seems to work fine, except that I can not connect to the Internet through my LAN cable (not sure that the problems are connected).
I have disassembled my computer and reassembled with with a few missing pieces (floppy drive and one DVD drive), since then I am getting that message.
I have an ABIT NF7-S motherboard and an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ processor. Also, when I go into the Soft Menu, it tells me CPU Internal Frequency 1100 MHz (100x11.0). Is that normal?

No, the 2500+ runs at 1833MHz (11 x 166MHz/333FSB). It sounds like you may have reset the BIOS. Run thru ALL the BIOS settings & correct as necessary...do not use default settings as they are not best performance settings.

I am having a problem, though. The external clock frequency is already set at 166 MHz and the multiplier factor is already at 11. Still, when I reboot the system, it keeps telling me 100x11.0 and I keep getting that error message. Is there anything else I should change? (I left the FSB/DRAM ratio on auto, I am not sure that that is ok).
I have gotten that message a few times, while overclocking my 2600+, it's not a big deal. Manually reset your CPU parameters via Softmenu III setup.
Use the following settings:
CPU Operating Speed: user defined External Clock: 166 Mhz Multiplier Factor: x11.0
With regards to your connection issue, go to the Integrated peripherals menu, look for OnChip PCI Device and enable Lan Controller. That should reactivate your ethernet port.
Remember F10 to save your changes before you exit the BIOS and reboot.

You only need to install the nForce drivers once, and for the BIOS update, it is a matter of choice. If you do not have any problems with your current BIOS, it's not necessary to update or change it.
I have gone through more than a dozen BIOS' for that board before Trats D27 simply because some of them allow more tolerance and headroom when overclocking than others.
If you decide to muck with a BIOS update, make sure you're comfortable with the task before you do the update.

the bios (at times) has trouble with plug-n-play, so I suggest just to reset your cmos (jumper on the motherboard) or just load fail self defaults in the bios, then Run thru ALL the BIOS settings & correct as necessary, as jam recommended
Just passing through and noticed this thread. It sounds like it could be that your CMOS Battery might have failed. I would go buy a new CMOS battery they are only like 3-5 bucks and replace it. It could be resetting the BIOS every time you restart your computer. Good luck to you.
I have that same ABIT NF7-S mobo. I also get the cpu error message. I have an AMD Athlon XP 3200+. There is a setting in the Softmenu to change BIoS to a 3200+ setting. However, when I cahnge any BIOS setting, then computer goes into a fit of restarts, accompanied by a flash of the boot up screen, followed again by another restart. I turn the computer off, and unplug it (my PSU has no switch, also it is a 450W so I know thats not the problem). I plug it back in and it posts, but still has the error message. I go into BIOS and the settings are what I left them at. I dont understand it at all. Also, Im having a problem with the RAM. I have various DDR chips from different manufacturers, but the only one I have gotten to work to get into BIOS, is a SpekTek 256Mb PC 2700 DDR chip. I have a SpekTek 512Mb PC 2700 DDR chip as well, but the computer will do no more than beep long beeps at me with that chip in there. All the other chips Ive tried (with the exception of the 256Mb SpekTek) have resulted in a No-Post, or a series of long beeps. I have built many a computer and have been for a long time, but Ive gotten pretty much stumped on this one. Since its 4th of July... no one is open :(
I got the same message last night - CPU unworkable
I have a Pentium III set at 266 FSB at default.
I have tried changing the speeds at the Softmenu - and that sometimes works. My computer boots up and loads my Cd-Drive, but then the computer freezes and doesn't load Windows?
Do I just keep changing the settings and hope that 1 works? Or is it something else?
I just wanted to add. After it loads all my drives, the computer also sometimes goes to the Windows did not load properly screen and it asks if I want to load in Normal mode or Safe Mode. The computer hands when I try to load it in Normal mode, but Safe Mode works fine and I can get into Windows then? But why won't it load Windows Normally?
