My hubby and I built our own computer. Big mistake I think, but nevertheless we did it. Here are the specs:
AMD Duron 800cpu
HP CD-RW cd 16 series
LG 52x max cd-rom
Generic 3.5"
Generic 5.25"
EliteGroup K7VZA MotherboardProblem is, this thing runs as slow as the 400cpu that I used to have . It idles at over 95% most of the time . What could be causing this and how do we fix it ?
We want to get the best optimal performance we can out of our computer without damaging anything .

Oh shoot I knew I forgot a few things.
I have 2 memory sticks. Both 128 for a total of 256.
My video card is a Nvdia Tnt 64 Model 64 Pro.

Well I think building it wasnt a mistake. Probably something that can be easily fixed. I just built my first computer and it works great. I'll show what I have near the bottom.
Anyway I did some research on your motherboard and its actually a decent one well from 2 yrs ago. Ok we know u have 256MB of ram 2x128MB but what type of ram is it? (pny,kingston,etc..)
When u say it runs slow, what do u mean by that? Does it run slow overall or does it run slow in programs. Is your windows 2000 pro up-2-date? Did u upgrade your video drivers for ur video card? service pack for win 2000? What type of hard drive and what speed? Have u tried taking out the cdrw and the 5.25 inch floppy drive and see if the problem disappears? Btw i havent seen a 5.25 inch floppy in like 15 yrs. Most inportantly is windows 2000 picking up all your hardware in the device manager?
Just built my system 2 weeks ago. It consist of>
Silver Chieftec case and 420w psu
motherboard asus a7v8x
amd athlon 1800+ (1.533GHz) overclocked @ 1.65GHz.
1 stick of Corsair DDR 2700 512MB XMS series
Samsung 7200 80GB HDD
Samsung 3.5 inch floppy
Thermaltake 9 Volcano Cpu Fan
acer dvd 16x
cyberdrive 32x12x48x cdrwI think thats it. Good luck with ur puter. later

sounds like something in the background is using all your cpu time. try mscong and see if you can find the criminal thats stealing all your cpu time.

Good insight chad...nice sys too BTW. Msconfig is not native on Win2k...u can get it here though:

First off the diff between a 400Mhz and a 800Mhz(even though its double the speed) is not huge...and depends on what apps your running. I really recommend benchmarking your system...this will tell you where some slow components are and if its hardware or software thats causing ur speed crisis. Here is a link to a popular consumer benchmark:
http://gamershq.madonion.com/download/?pcmark2002.shtml
BTW...Samantha the sys you just built is not very well valued...at this day and age a slow sys like that is not worth building for the money...you should have gotten something in the middle of the spectrum...definately 1Ghz+. That is where the value is...and the best bang for your buck. GL though!

Thanx. Very true sabot. People have to do some research. Like me i been looking to build a new computer for about a yr now. And I learned alot before I even decided on building one. I upgraded from a p3 800MHz. I am a gamer and liked playing this new game called Battlefield 1942. I hated playing it on my p3 at around maybe 15 frames/sec if i was lucky. But u should base what u really need. For some people an 800MHz would make them happy. For me on the other hand it made me miserable.
The new computer I built from the ground up I cant even compare it to my old system. Its on a diffrent level and I am still shocked on how fast it is in comparison to the old p.o.s.
With your new system samantha I would definately next time do some research. It looks like alot of the hardware with your system is yrs old. And as for the operating system. U did not pick an operating system that is very compatible. Dont get me wrong, windows 2000 is a great o.s. but u should be thinking of compatability and windows 2000 is not even close. I would of did a fresh install with windows 98 or windows xp. But as i mentioned before, make sure you update everything. Remove the 15 yr old floppy if u have to and take it from there. Good luck
With your new system

I think you may have NO problem. If you look at the report made by the program --CPU-IDLE-- itself, you will see that it shows how much of the cpu power is being used by programs AT THAT MOMENT. If little is running (likely the case, if you're taking the time to look at the report) then OF COURSE it shows little power being used. It's not a speed meter, it's a power-used report. Read the manual.
I use WaterFall, but they're about the same. I had a 486 whose CPU was way too hot to touch --with Waterfall on, it was cooler than my finger!
