I understand I think, the answer is if your motherboard supports a faster processor then you can put a 200 mhz pentium overdrive or pro in it

You may be able to run a 200MHz P1 at 166MHz. You may be able to clock it up to 200MHz or higher depending on your MOBO. P2s are slot CPUs and I doubt your MOBO will accommodate one. There are a few MOBOs that support both P1s and P2s.

my computer is a Aopen....and the reason i think the cpu is bad is because my external cache wont work..my computer will only go into system reg. so i disable itt and it works...people said it is cuz the cpu is it? and someone else said it is the MOBO

have you recently done anything to you computer? like removed the processor or the external cache that would damage it? try this site for upgrading to 200mhz pentium overdrive and then check ebay.com for the processor.

You can also check out the evergreen processors at;

http://www.evertech.com/

Make the selections as to your system. If you're unable to answer on the questions you will be taken to another page where you can download a utility. Run the program and it gathers system information and is usually able to get enough info to make upgrade selections (by clicking on the "recommended updates" tab at the bottom of the window which pops up after the program has run)
Then go to ebay;

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&query=upgrade&categoryid=&ht=1&category2=3671&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&BasicSearch=

You can probably upgrade your system to 400MHz for perhaps $50

the only problem with evertech is that they sell cyrix products and windows hates those things with a vengeance. but it's your choice just trying to point out a few helping facts (if you use linux or another operating system then they're ok)

Paul,
Absolutely no offence to your educating me/us on anything. Quite the opposite in fact. I knew none of that, and have been itching to get this 1.4 GHz upgrade for my PentiumII system.
I had noticed that the L2 cache was only 256k, VS 512k for my currently running Intel PII. Now I'm thinking about another possible alternative for my machine which would be the PIII 600MHz "black widow?".
Please tell more details if you have them, as I am ignorant about Cyrix processors.....except I thought they went out of business or were bought out by AMD?
I'm all ears for other suggestions for upgrades!

Either way, with the current price of hardware, you'd be better off just getting a new system all together rather than spend time (or any money at all) on that system.

so art smass, you have a slot 1 pentium 2? does it support 100mhz fsb or 66mhz? either way I suggest like a celeron 2 with a fc-ppga to slot 1 adapter and/or any other processor that will surpass the old pentium 2's. but haven't really read into the pentium 3 600mhz. if you want to look around (like I did) you'll find some nice deals for fc-ppga to slot 1

Paul,
Yes, it's a slot 1 450MHz Pentium II. with . This particular motherboard uses a 100MHz FSB, and can accept up to a PIII 600MHz. I'll start educating myself now on the fc-ppga to slot 1 adapter, and the celeron 2. Thanks for the information, and have a great day!
