MOTHERBOARD MODEL: ASUSP4V533-MX
Can a 800MHz fsb cpu run at 533MHz fsb?
I am able to get a 2.8GHz socket 478 cpu with 512KB cache, but the only problem is that it has a FSB of 800Mhz and my m/b only supports 400/533Mhz FSB.
I would like to know if there is any chance at all that I can get the 800MHz fsb cpu to run on my m/b at 533MHz fsb.Sarosh

I know we went over what CPUs your board supports & I supplied you with links to the ASUS site, but here they are again:
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
http://www.asus.com//products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=53&model=212&modelmenu=1
A 2.8GHz/800FSB CPU runs at 14 x 200MHz. If you install it on your 533FSB board & it works, it will only run at 1.867GHz (14 x 133MHz)...is that really what you want? Besides, I thought you already bought a 2.4GHz/533FSB Northwood?

Hi Dude,
My friend just sent me an email and they shipped the processor to his wrong address. Now they are offering him two replacement cpus:1) PentiumĀ® 4 2.6GHz CPU PROCESSOR - Socket 478 - 800MHz Bus 512k - Socket 478 - 800 MHz Bus OEM 30days warranty
2) Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz 533MHz 478pin 1MB CPU OEM MFN RK80546PE0721M OEM RK80546PE0721M Processor Type: Pentium 4 processor Processor Frequency: 2.80A GHz Socket: 478 pin PPGA Bus Speed: 533 MHz L2 Cache Size: 1 MB L2 Cache Speed:
If any of these will work with my m/b that would be great, or else I will just have to get another 2.4GHz cpu.Jam, what do you think, will the 800MHz fsb cpu come down to 533FSB an run?
Similarly, if I install a 1MB cache cpu will it still work as though it is 512KB.
However, if there is any risk at all I would prefer to tell him to get me another compatable processor rather than risk any of the other two.
Sarosh

In any case, I dont want a cpu to run at 1.867GHz. I better go in for a compatable 2.4GH northwood.
However, I suspect that the seller may tell my friend that these processors will work and he might make the mistake of buyiing either one of them. And so I want to confirm with you guys quickly that none of the above two processors are actually recommended for my system.Sarosh

HI Jam,
I am going to ask him to get this cpu as a replacement instead. Hope I have made the rigth choice.

"My friend just sent me an email and they shipped the processor to his wrong address."
What does that mean, "his wrong address"? How many addresses does he have? LOL! I've dealt with CompGeeks in the past. I've gotten several boards, CPUs, video cards, sound cards, etc from them & have never had any problems, with the exception of one cheap PSU that I took a chance on...it burned out in less than 6 months. I wrote them an e-mail explaining what happened & I was expecting a hassle & long delay...but within a week, a new PSU was delivered to my house, free of charge & no other questions asked. I didn't even have to ship back the old one.
"Hope I have made the rigth choice"
Well, it's on the ASUS CPU support list:
"P4-2.53 GHz (533 FSB, L2 cache:512KB)"

Thats true Jam,
I have always had some or the another difficulty whenever I have wanted to upgrade my computer.
For example, I am finally at 1GB ram after trying 3 different ram sticks and lots of tinkering with the motherboard.
My friend lived in New Orleans, and his home was destroyed in the Huricane. I was helping him out with his college courses.
He says that he repeatedly asked the website not to send it to the new orleans address, but maybe because it was holiday season they did not get his message on time and they ended up shipping the cpu to the wrong addres anyway.
Now they are offering him 2 other processors, both of which are superiour, but none of which will work on my system.
So I have asked him to request www.geeks.com to send me the 2.53Mhz cpu instead and I hope they agree with him and send him that cpu.
Sarosh

"He says that he repeatedly asked the website not to send it to the new orleans address"
Well, I would have to say it was his fault then. When you place an order with CompGeeks (& most any other site), you obviously have to fill out an address form...if you're a returning customer, you have to enter your e-mail address & password, then your info comes up & asks if you want the items shipped to the address on file, or a different address. He must have clicked thru the screens too quickly & didn't bother to make the necessary changes.

That may be true jam,
But it is making me nervous over here because I am waiting so long for a faster processor and I just hope I finally get one that works.Sarosh

Instead of all this stress, just stick to your motherboards CPU compatibility list which has been given to you before as i can see and stop procastinating about other options.
If this 2.4Ghz processor has generated all these separate threads within the past few days i wonder how many threads would have come if you where to upgrade to a dualprocessor LOL
Again- Google is your friend...use it.
