I was curious I have an Asus P4p800-deluxe and i am running a p4 2.8c(northgate) at 3.5ghz running a divider and all. Its been overclocked for a good 4 months. No problems but the other night I got a message when I booted up "CPU FAN failed" So i quickly turned the computer off. Waited bout 15 mins to turn it back on and haven't got the message again and have been running steady its teady for a week. I also pulled the case out and actually looked at the cpu fan(heatsink and all) and it seems to be spinning as normal. Temperatures are completely normal(using asus probe)Then I was in windows and the Asus probe box came up and flashed the cpu fan at 0 for like 1 second and then again no problems temperatures were fine and it then went back to to 2205 on the speed? Anyway else run in to this? Everything seems to be normal but that got me paranoid. Its a Zalman 7000A heatsink/fan(also used artic silver to keep cpu cool)Thanks sorry for the long post.

forgot to mention this happened after i installed video card drivers. This seems like it would be irrelevant to me but it was after i rebooted.

All you need to do is lower your cpu fan threshold a little bit. Open up your Asus Probe and go to settings. Now, just lower the rpm's a little. Then I would go the fan montor and watch the fan speed. Do somework on the computer, play a game, then come back to the fan monitor and observe. If it's getting within 100 rpm's of your threshold, lower it another hundred rpm. This probably happened when your puter was just setting idle. Your cpu fan tends to throttle down the lower the cpu temp falls and it crossed your threshold setting sending up an alarm.
No biggie. Good luck!

Thanks YO, I tried lowering it and it doesn't allow me to go any lower its set at the defaults which for the cpu thershold is 600 and thats as low as it lets me take it. I should explain that the Cpu fail message I heard was at boot(its got a talking bios) and asus has this thig called smart fan technology or something like that thats check in the bios.(might be q technolgy can't remember) So im not sure how I cahnge this setting all can I do is raise it. What I don't get for instance right now im idling at 29C on the cpu temps. Any other suggestions?

Maddog,

Now that I thought about it a little longer and although I'm not an Intel man, I would think 2000 on a cpu fan is awfully low IMO. I know Intels supposedly run a little cooler than an AMD but geez that sounds too low RPM wise. Are you sure you got your wires plugged into the correct connectors? 2000 RPM's sounds more like a chassis fan speed to me. Have you unplugged the wires lately and mistakenly plugged them back into the wrong connectors? Usually the cpu connector is the one up top.

yeah going by asus prob keep in mind these are at the asus prob default settings, but it says cpu fan speed 2191 now it lets me speed it up alot like go higher. If I change the settings. Actually I haven't unplugged it, a friend of mine built the computer. He knows alot about them, but I may double check that.
