Yeah, get a new one. That one is gonna either drive you insane or bust something up. Either way it's not good. Usually when things that are quiet start making really loud noises, it's time to get a new one. Same holds true for hard drives, CD-Roms, mouses, CPU's, mobos, RAM, GFX cards. Now, you may notice some of those are usually silent. So if you here your CPU going *crackle, crackle* or *woosh, burn, burn, burn, fire noises*, you know it's time for a new one.

Have a Compaq Presario 7400 series that has started making sounds like described above. I have now replaced the cpu fan/heat sink, and the power supply. Still have the noise. (Sounds sort of like an electronic mosquito swarm trapped in the case.)
Even tested with the power on and almost all known "moving parts" disconnected (hard drive, floppy, cd devices, cpu fan BRIEFLY): The sound was still there. It is coming from the mobo: perhaps a capacitor or the CPU? How could the CPU (AMD K6-2) make noise?
So far this 2-1/2 year old box is still functioning ok. No more crashes than normal since the noise started. However, it is annoying!
is there any free Win98 software that monitors temp.?
Thanks for any help :D
