Okay. Brand new computer. Upon the first power up the CPU fan is SO incredibly noisy that it vibrates the case. This goes on for about 3 days (and I shut off the PC at night). Soon enough it is down to a small noise that oscillates a bit and sounds rather normal. However, what is happening to a brand new computer when upon powering up upon the first week, there is a CPU Fan Failure warning and the system powers down in 5 seconds BUT...the fan is definately NOT spinning. Upon calling Tech support I was instructed to unplug everything from the wall, everything from the tower, then press & hold the power button for 30 seconds, release, plug all back in and up and power up. The CPU fan makes a surging whir and on she goes. End of story? Nope.

These sporadic "fan failures" occur at intervals randomly (always "corrected" by this odd method given to me by TS)...could be once every two months, once a week. Now they occur every day. Everything powers up as it should except for this fan. It is correctly plugged into the motherboard, it is attached firmly, temperatures are normal, but this rotten fan. I don't know what is causing this. This is a great system and everything is up to par...this is my only problem. Should I just replace this "problem fan"? I wonder if it's unbalanced. Any suggestions would be nice.

If this is a new pc i'd be calling them back and demanding them to give me a replacement if that is the case. I mean you you shouldn't have to pay for anything if the problem is due to a fualty fan which is on their end. Get it replaced especially if it's a four pin molex motherboard controlled cpu fan.

Yeah well TS did their job and put me off so now there is no exchanging that's gonna happen:P Looks like it's up to me to fix the prob. It's a three pin though so at least that's so so. Guess I'll just have to replace the fan/heatsink.

Your 1st mistake was to buy a Comcrap...your 2nd mistake will be to void the warranty

Yeah that's all too obvious now. I won't be dealing with Compaq again. Secondly the warranty is expired so it's either try to do something about it or pay another $700 for a new computer.

"Okay. Brand new computer."

If it's brand new, how is the warranty expired?

"Brand new" was in reference to the CPU fan problem occurring shortly after purchase. Meaning that it couldn't be worn out/dirt caked, etc.

How can "Okay. Brand new computer" be a "reference to the CPU Fan problem occurring shortly after purchase"?The PC is either Brand new or it's not.
Unless of course by brand new PC you mean you just upgraded your PC with a brand new CPU or brand new HSF.
What's the full story?

Wow. Okay major confusion here. All I wanted to know was what could have caused the CPU fan to start failing shortly after purchase. Bought the computer from the store. Came home. CPU fan is so loud it rattles the case. Within days the fan fails. They give me the "solution" to jumpstart it. Has been happening off and on ever since, getting worse. This is not normal. What could have caused the CPU fan to start this in the first place? That was my question. I haven't touched it.

heh, just get a new fan and it will be fine.
You might want to try another fan plug on the motherboard too.

jam and tambes, I think he has been putting up with the fan problem for a fair while. The PC has had the problem since it was brand new.

I actually like old Compaq's as they usually seem pretty sturdy. I think that once HP bought them they went a bit downhill.

Not particularly surprising ..... WYBIWYG!

HP had stated in the past that the acquired Compaq brand was positioned as their low end PC solution, followed by the in-house HP brand as the mid line & the Voodoo brand is the enthusiast product, targeted at the very high end PC customers.

Well aside from the crappy fan I'm pretty pleased with the PC. I'm not a gamer and it meets my needs so I suppose I'd say it's okay.
