CPU damage?

Hi! I've recently changed my CPU cooler to a Zalman CNPS6000-Cu cooler. I installed it according to the instructions, but when I ran my computer the troubles began. i could hear the fan going on-line, but there was nothing on my monitor. The light was blinking on it as if the computer was off. Also, my CD-ROM and CD-RW ROM kept going "clunk!", like always when my computer reboots, but they usually do it only once! Then I tried putting the old cooler back in, but nothing changed. I have a ECS Elitegroup K7S5A motherboard and a AMD Duron (Morgan) 1200 MHz processor. Did I damage the CPU (I don't recall doing that, though)? Anyone have any ideas?

when you installed the new fan, did you remove the processor or shift it ( hard to do, but maybe it's no clamped in properly.) also reseting the bios might help (throught the jumpers)

this is stupid, but make sure you have all the cables in securely. i've done that too often..

If you rocked the HSF on the CPU core, you may have chipped it.

I’ve done this and my symptoms were identical.

Examine the core with a bright light and a magnifying glass.

If you see any chips, you may have your diagnosis.

OK, the CPU core seems OK, I've made sure everything neccesary is connected and I have removed the CPU and put it back in, just in case, but it's still the same! What if there is a teeny, tiny dent in the CPU core and I don't know about it? Does that mean I need a new CPU?! *shudders*
