Comment: I have a A8N-VM 939 socket board running a 3500+ AMD. I changed to a X2 4200+ Toledo. Since the change, games shut down and the net sometimes shut down and the computer restarts. The BIOS is 0908 but on the ASUS site it doesn't exist. Any ideas what might be wrong? Thank you.

Reply: (edit)Did you clean off the old thermal paste and apply only a half grain of rice on the cpu? Too much thermal paste can overheat the cpu. Did you put back on the heatsink and fan correctly by making sure the heatsink is fully flushed down on the processor?

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the reply. No didn't clean off the old paste but will give that a try. I put the 3500+ back in and the computer is working perfect. Then I put back the X2 4200 and the games shut down again. I checked the fan and heatsink and looks flush. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)You need to totally remove ALL traces of the old paste from both the CPU & heatsink, then clean them with alcohol or acetone. One clean, do NOT touch the surfaces! Then apply a small dab of paste about the size of a grain of rice in the center of the CPU. Follow these instructions regardless of the brand of paste you use: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/app... "The BIOS is 0908 but on the ASUS site it doesn't exist" I just checked & you're right...it's not listed. Maybe it was problematic & they removed it from their site? If you're comfortable flashing the BIOS, update to the latest available at the ASUS site. I suggest doing it "old school" from DOS using a bootable floppy disk. And make sure to backup your old BIOS during the flash process in case you wanna re-try it.

Reply: (edit)I cleaned both the CPU and heatsink as per the instructions and re-applied more and same thing is still happening, games shutting down. I haven't tried the BIOS yet though.
