I have just replaced my CPU battery after many checksum errors and now when I turn the PC on all I get is a beeping noise after a few seconds (I have also just replaced a floppy drive aswell). I have checked the video card etc since I am getting no VDU display either....I am assuming a BIOS settings problem but I have no idea how to proceed. I am basically helping a friend out by replacing the floppy drive etc on a PC with no operating system (i.e I am about to load Win98 on a new HD drive)...but there is no response from the Floppy drive at all..so the boot disk cannot be accessed...help!

I'm sure you know this, but by removing the battery, you lost your BIOS settings & they've reset to the defaults...still, it should boot up regardless of that. Have you checked your RAM? Maybe you bumped it & it's not getting a good connection? I'd double check all your cards & memory...make sure they're seated correctly in their slots. Did you set the new hard drive jumpers properly? Ribbon cables attached the right way (not flipped)?

Yes...checked the RAM...checked everything for a tight fit...no cable snags or cuts..checked the boot-up with battery in and out...the only thing I have changed since it was working OK was the battery.
It now bleeps from the moment I turn the PC on!...which would normally imply a dodgy video card wouldn't it?...but the PC I have only has a ribbon cable from the monitor port onto the Motherboard..no actual card...it looks as though I may have to shell out for a techie to have a look!!
