My computer starting slowing down and freezing. I have gradually increased it to 640MB of RAM, each increase helps for awhile, but then it starts slowing down again and freezing. When I use selective startup, I start with 95% system resources, but within a short period I drop to around 60%. I've noticed that my CPU runs almost constantly at 100%. My computer is a Compaq 5900Z with an AMD K7 550mhz processor. I'm running Windows ME. My hard drive capacity. is 18.6 gigs, but I am using only 9.46 gigs.
Any ideas? Should I replace my CPU or is my hard drive dying? I have used the Compaq support line in the past, but the problem always comes back and now they won't support me because I have added additional ram and changed from Windows 98 to Windows ME. Note these problems didn't start until several months after I upgraded to Windows ME

You probably have a bunch of stuff running in the background. Whenever this happens to me I just reformat, start fresh.
-Me

Sounds like a memory leak to me.
I had a similar problem once. The culprit application was a small program that continued to allocate memory without releasing memory on completion so it just gradually consumed all memory addresses. You can add more memory but eventually the leak will consume those resources too. The only solution I found was to identify the application and remove it from my system.
Good luck

98 sec was a better O/S than Me which is actually a downgrade got rid of mine and now run 98 and XP dual boot.
also run ad-aware and disable the restore function in ME it chews up resources I use GoBack myself far better for restoring your HDD as it was 2 days ago
