Hi! I hope someone can help me because I have done everything I can think of to find out why my CPU is constantly at 100%. I get this reading using Windows Sys Monitor, Norton, PC Pitstop, and every resource I've used to check it. The computer ran fine for several months. It is a Compaq Presario. I run DSL with a NAT Router. Can anyone offer me any info as to what might cause a CPU to run at 100% ALL THE TIME? I have run virus scans with Norton, yes my definitions are up-to-date. Could it be a maliciously written program that was once installed? (Anyone ever heard of a program called FLASK MPEG?) The PC is whining, and I fear it's about to blow. Is this a hardware device issue or what? The CPU has been running like this for 3 weeks or more. Thanks in advance for any help!

what background software are you running? If you have firewall and antivirus running, that alone will task your computer

Yes, I am running Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus. But even when I turn those programs off it is still at 100%. And anyway, I have always run those programs in the past but without the CPU running at 100%. Other than that all I am running is windows and my mouse software. Anymore suggestions? Thanks!!

I had that problem before and I fixed it by running recovery disc of my OS. Make sure to back-up your files before you do this. If that doesnt work reformat your Hard drive and install OS again. GOODLUCK

Dont formatt your hard drive just yet. have you tried msconfig yet? If not try it first before formatting. If you dont know how to do this then here it is. click start and then run. Type msconfig....goto the setup tab and you will see all the programs that startup when you bootup windows. Uncheck a few and restart windows and check your cpu usage. keed doing this untill you find the program that is using your cpu all the time. This is much faster than formatting.

Okay, thanks guys! I'm going to try MSCONFIG and if that doesn't work. I'm going to try the Recovery CD. Formatting is my very, very last resort! Thanks Again!

Just wanted to thank you all for your help once more, and let you know that my CPU is now running at 6% :) It WAS the firewall software. I pinpointed the problem using MSCONFIG. I don't know why I didn't try that sooner! Stubborn & Silly I suppose! Have A Splendid Day! And thanks again!
