Subject: Correct CPU / RAM combination?OS: XP Prof SP2CPU/Ram: Athlon 64 3000+, 2 x 256MModel/Manufacturer: Home build |
Comment: I have just upgraded my boy's PC by fitting a new Winfast 760GXK8MC board and Athlon 64 3000+ CPU. I used his 2 x 256MB PC2700 RAM from the previous socket A board. The CPU runs at 200mhz and the RAM at 166mhz. The system seems to run very well (much faster than his old XP2000 CPU) and never crashes. Am I holding back performance with this RAM or should I upgrade the RAM too? Also, during boot up it lists the RAM as DDR333 2T Single Channel. Surely with 2 sticks of RAM I should be running dual channel. Am I correct? Any help appreciated.

Reply: (edit)You definitely could have picked a better motherboard. I wouldn't wish an SiS based board on anyone. Most S754 boards don't support dual channel mode, so what you're seeing is correct. As for the RAM speed (DDR333 vs DDR400), DDR400 would definitely be preferrable, but you can make do with DDR333. There is no FSB in an A64 system, so the CPU & RAM don't necessarily have to run at the same bus speed. Make sure to tweak your BIOS settings, don't simply run with defaults. Change the command rate to 1T & see what happens...if the system becomes unstable, change it back to 2T.
