I'm considering buying a laptop with a Core Duo processor. I know that soon (Q4), Merom will be released and will be an improvement over this. Will the Merom processors be compatiable with Core Duo systems? Meaning, when the merom comes out can I upgrade my processor to it? I've heard mixed things. I know Merom will have its own chipset which will launch later but i also heard that it would run in duo chipset

I am not too fond of Intel mobile processors for one big reason and that is they still lack 64bit support. If you are going to spend 1200+ on a laptop you atleast want to have an option to go 64bit in the future and not be stuck in the 32bit world.
I'd say get an AMD Turion 64. Nice mobile processors based on the Athlon 64 Mobile, but with improved battery life. Plus it's 64bit.
